On 25 July 2019, the Met Office station at Cambridge University Botanic Garden recorded 38.7°C, at the time the highest temperature ever measured in the UK. Hot summers are no longer unusual here, and top-floor flats and loft rooms take the worst of it.

Cool it cheaply first

External blinds or shutters on south and west windows stop heat before it enters. Opening windows on opposite sides at night flushes out warm air. If those steps are not enough, a single split unit in the bedroom is the most efficient fix.

Flats and rented homes

Over a third of Cambridge households live in flats and more than half rent. Both mean someone else has to agree. In a flat, the freeholder or management company must approve an outdoor unit. In a rented home, the landlord must give written permission.

If you cannot get consent, a portable unit vented through a window is the fallback. It cools less efficiently but needs no fixed installation.

Planning and noise

If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with Cambridge City Council before fitting an outdoor unit. Wherever you live, keep it away from neighbours' bedroom windows.

What the quote should show

Check the cooling capacity for each room in kilowatts, the outdoor unit's noise rating, the pipe route through the wall and where the condensate drains. Ask whether a new electrical circuit is included, and how often the system needs servicing to keep the warranty.

Winter heating

A split unit is an air-to-air heat pump and can heat in winter. If it replaces fossil fuel heating, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £2,500 through an MCS certified installer.

Cambridge homes and what they need

Victorian gault brick and red brick terraces

Thick brick keeps downstairs cool, but loft conversions overheat. The rear roof slope or back wall usually takes the outdoor unit.

Interwar and post-war semis in the northern and eastern suburbs

A side wall gives a short pipe route to the main bedroom, making installation simpler.

Recent developments on the city fringes

Airtight new homes and big windows can trap heat. Check the development's rules on external equipment first.
