Air conditioning installation in Middlesbrough

Wall-mounted split units for bedrooms, loft rooms and home offices. We pass requests to F-Gas certified installers who cover Middlesbrough.

Teesside summers are usually mild. July 2022 was the exception: on the 19th, Leeming in North Yorkshire reached 38.8°C and Topcliffe 39.6°C. The Met Office said Leeming was the most northerly station to beat the old UK record.

Nights that hot make bedrooms hard to sleep in, especially in loft conversions and south-facing rooms. That's where most air conditioning in Middlesbrough homes ends up.

Air-to-air heat pumps

A split AC unit can heat as well as cool. Used as the main heating in a room, it's often cheaper to run than an electric heater. If it replaces fossil fuel heating, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £2,500 towards an air-to-air system, under the scheme's conditions.

That makes it worth considering in the 5.9% of Middlesbrough homes on electric-only heating.

Fitting and the rules

The installer must hold F-Gas certification to handle refrigerant. The outdoor unit needs a solid wall or ground mount, and the pipe run should be as short as practical.

One unit on a house is normally permitted development. Flats need the freeholder's consent, and listed buildings need consent too.

Before you buy

External blinds, reflective film and opening windows at night may be enough in many homes. If you still need cooling, size the unit for the room, not the house.

Middlesbrough homes and what they need

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Rear bedrooms with a flat-roofed extension below can overheat badly. A unit with the outdoor part on the back wall keeps the front of the house unchanged.

Interwar and postwar semis

Converted lofts are the usual target. A small unit with a short run to the gable wall is typical.

Newer estates on the southern edge

Large glazed rooms facing south can heat up fast. Shading on the outside of the glass works better than blinds inside.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Middlesbrough work across areas including Linthorpe, Acklam, Marton, Nunthorpe, Coulby Newham, Ormesby, Hemlington, Thornaby, Redcar and Guisborough.

Questions people in Middlesbrough ask

How much does it cost to run?

It depends on the unit and how hot it gets. Modern inverter units are efficient, and in a mild Teesside summer most run only on a few days.

Do units need servicing?

Yes. Clean filters every few months, and have an F-Gas engineer check it every year or two.

Will the outdoor unit bother my neighbours?

Choose a quiet model and mount it on anti-vibration feet, away from their windows. In a terraced street, the back wall above a flat-roofed extension often keeps it furthest from bedrooms.
