On 19 July 2022 the weather station at Pitsford, a few miles north of Northampton, recorded 40.2°C. It was a new Midlands record. The day before, the same station had the highest temperature anywhere in the UK, 38.2°C. Northamptonshire has a history here: Raunds held the UK record of 36.7°C for decades after August 1911.

Most of the town's homes were not designed for that kind of heat.

Choosing a system

A wall-mounted split unit is the usual choice for a bedroom or living room. The outdoor unit sits on a bracket or the ground and connects through a small hole in the wall. A multi-split runs two to four indoor heads from one outdoor unit, useful in a larger detached home.

The installer must hold an F-Gas certificate to connect and charge the refrigerant.

Size matters. An undersized unit runs flat out and still can't cope on the hottest days, while an oversized one cycles on and off and leaves the room clammy. The installer should base it on the room size, windows and how much sun the room gets.

Cheaper measures first

External blinds or shutters on south and west windows block heat before it gets in. Loft insulation keeps upstairs rooms cooler. Night purging, opening windows on both sides of the house after dark, works well in through-terraces.

Owners and renters

Almost two thirds of West Northamptonshire households own their home, so most can decide for themselves. Renters need written landlord consent. Estates may have covenants about what you can fix to the front of the house, so check before choosing a position.

Northampton homes and what they need

Planned estates and newer developments

Rear walls and garages are good spots for the outdoor unit. Keep it away from neighbours' bedrooms and patio areas.

Interwar and postwar semis

Side walls give a short pipe run to a front bedroom. Bigger semis often suit a two-head multi-split.

Red-brick Victorian terraces

The back bedroom over the kitchen gets hottest. A single split unit there may be all you need.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Northampton work across areas including Abington, Kingsthorpe, Duston, Weston Favell, Far Cotton, Kingsley, Spinney Hill, Upton, Wootton and Moulton.

Questions people in Northampton ask

Can it heat in winter as well?

Yes. A split unit is an air-to-air heat pump and heats efficiently. If it replaces fossil fuel heating, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme may pay £2,500.

How noisy is the outdoor unit?

Modern units are quiet, but sound carries on still summer nights. Ask the installer for the sound power figure and keep the unit away from bedroom windows, yours and the neighbours'.
