Gas engineer courses in Aberdeen

The main routes into gas and heating work for people in and around Aberdeen.

With nearly four in five Aberdeen homes on mains gas and a large private rented sector needing yearly safety checks, gas work in the city is steady. To do any of it, you need to be on the Gas Safe Register, which means passing ACS assessments first.

Starting from scratch

North East Scotland College runs a full-time plumbing pre-apprenticeship at its Aberdeen Altens campus. It covers hot and cold water, heating and ventilation, and is designed to lead into a Modern Apprenticeship. Entry asks for two National 5s, ideally including Maths and a technical subject.

The Plumbing and Heating Modern Apprenticeship is at SCQF Level 7 and usually takes around three years. You need an employer to take you on, and you earn while you train.

Adding gas to plumbing

Qualified plumbers usually add gas through a managed learning programme and then ACS assessment at an approved centre, starting with the core safety unit CCN1 and adding appliances such as boilers. Check that any centre is properly approved before paying.

What Aberdeen work looks like

A lot of early-career gas work in the city is landlord safety checks and servicing. Nearly one in five Aberdeen households rents privately, and every one of those homes with gas needs a check each year. Letting agents often book these in batches, which gives new engineers a steady diary.

The housing adds its own challenges. Flues through thick granite walls, boilers in tenement kitchen presses and condensate pipes that freeze in January all come up often, so time spent shadowing an experienced engineer on real jobs is worth more than extra hours on a training rig.

Oil and heat pump skills

Step outside the city and oil matters a lot. In Aberdeenshire, 21.3% of households heat with oil, according to Scotland's Census 2022. OFTEC qualifications open up that work, and MCS heat pump skills are increasingly in demand as homes switch with Home Energy Scotland funding.

Areas covered

Questions people in Aberdeen ask

Can I train for gas work while I have a job?

Yes. Apprentices are employed from the start. Plumbers on the ACS route can keep working while they build up their gas portfolio.

Does Gas Safe registration cover oil boilers?

No. Oil heating is covered by OFTEC, which runs its own training and registration.

How long does it take to become Gas Safe registered?

Through an apprenticeship, expect around three years. Experienced plumbers can often get there faster through ACS assessment, but they still need a portfolio of supervised gas work.
