Gas engineer courses in Glasgow
Routes into domestic gas work in Glasgow, from an apprenticeship to ACS assessment.
City of Glasgow College runs two of the main gas routes in the city. For new entrants there is an SVQ Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship in Domestic Natural Gas Installation and Maintenance. For people who already work in the trade, it offers BPEC ACS training and assessment for CCN1, the core domestic gas safety qualification, plus appliance units.

Apprenticeship
A Modern Apprenticeship means being employed from day one and studying alongside work. You need to find an employer willing to take you on; the college can advise on how that works and on current entry requirements.
Gas apprentices learn installation, servicing and safety on real jobs, which is the experience Gas Safe registration depends on.
ACS for existing engineers
The CCN1 course covers gas supply and pipework, combustion, ventilation, safety devices, emergency procedures and the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations. Appliance units include CENWAT for boilers and water heaters, CKR1 for cookers and HTR1 for gas fires. Certificates last five years and must be renewed.
What the work looks like
Three quarters of Glasgow homes use mains gas, most of them in flats. Expect tenement kitchen cupboards, flues into back courts and old back boilers behind gas fires. Social landlords, who house over a third of the city, need every gas appliance in their homes checked each year, which keeps servicing teams busy.
Choosing a provider
Check that any training centre is approved to run ACS assessments, and be wary of courses that promise registration in a few weeks with no site experience. Gas Safe registration depends on genuine competence, and employers look for evidence of real installation and servicing work.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Glasgow work across areas including Partick, Dennistoun, Shawlands, Hyndland, Govan, Maryhill, Pollokshields, Cathcart, Bearsden and Rutherglen.
Questions people in Glasgow ask
Where is the college?
City of Glasgow College lists its City Campus on Cathedral Street and Riverside Campus on Thistle Street. Contact the gas team to find out where training takes place.
Does Gas Safe cover heat pumps or oil?
No. Heat pumps need separate training and MCS certification for grant-funded work, and oil comes under OFTEC.
How long does an ACS certificate last?
Five years. City of Glasgow College says you can be re-assessed within six months of expiry; if it lapses by more than a year, you need the full initial assessment again.
Can I add gas skills if I am already a plumber?
Yes. Plumbers usually complete supervised gas work and then take ACS assessments starting with CCN1 before joining the Gas Safe Register.
