Gas engineer courses in Ipswich

Training routes into gas work for people in Ipswich and east Suffolk.

Suffolk New College offers a Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative apprenticeship. Apprentices attend the Ipswich campus one day a week and spend the rest of the week working for their employer, with starts in September and January.

You'll need an employer who will take you on for at least 30 hours a week. The college also expects a minimum level of English and maths, with support to reach Level 2 if you're below it.

What you'll learn

The course covers the Gas Engineering Operative standard and leads to Gas Safe registration. The end-point assessment is run by City and Guilds. A pass or distinction lets you apply to IGEM for Engineering Technician status.

Finding an employer

Local heating firms, housing associations and the council's housing contractors all take on apprentices. Search the government's Find an Apprenticeship service and contact firms directly. Some employers recruit through the college.

Heat pumps and the future

Gas work isn't going away soon, but heat pumps are growing. After qualifying, many engineers add an MCS-recognised heat pump course and F-Gas certification so they can fit both. That keeps you employable as households switch over the coming years.

Work in the area

Three quarters of Ipswich homes heat with gas only, and 23% of households rent privately, so there's steady demand for annual landlord gas checks. Many new engineers build experience on servicing before moving to installation.

Suffolk's villages also use oil and LPG. Adding OFTEC or LPG qualifications later widens the work you can take on.

For experienced plumbers

If you're already a plumber, a managed learning programme followed by ACS assessments is the faster route. Check that any private training centre is properly accredited before paying.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Ipswich work across areas including Kesgrave, Martlesham, Rushmere St Andrew, Whitton, Chantry, Pinewood, Ravenswood, Gainsborough, Westerfield and Bramford.
