Gas engineer courses in Plymouth

How school leavers and career changers in Plymouth can train for gas work, and where engineers renew their certificates.

More than 92,000 Plymouth households heat with mains gas alone, and over a fifth of homes are privately rented, each needing a gas safety check every year. That keeps steady demand for Gas Safe registered engineers in the city.

City College Plymouth runs a Gas Centre that provides ACS training and assessments, used both by new engineers and by experienced ones renewing their certificates.

The apprenticeship route

For school leavers, the main route is the Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative apprenticeship. It combines paid work with a gas business and off-the-job training, and ends with ACS certification and Gas Safe registration. Expect it to take around three years. Ask City College Plymouth and local training providers which of them currently deliver it.

You'll usually need GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4 or above, or an equivalent.

Already a plumber?

Plumbers and heating installers can add gas through a managed learning programme followed by an ACS initial assessment. You need supervised experience with a Gas Safe registered engineer to build a portfolio, so arrange that before you enrol.

ACS at City College Plymouth

The Gas Centre offers the core domestic gas safety assessment, CCN1, and appliance assessments such as CENWAT for boilers and water heaters, CKR1 for cookers, HTR1 for fires and MET1 for meters. Appliance units are taken after CCN1. Bookings go through the Gas Centre's administration team.

Each ACS certificate lasts five years, then you're reassessed.

Skills that add work

Unvented hot water and water regulations qualifications let you fit system boilers with cylinders. F-Gas and heat pump courses open up work funded by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and the Warm Homes: Local Grant. Many Plymouth engineers combine gas with one or both.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Plymouth work across areas including Plympton, Plymstock, Mutley, Mannamead, Peverell, Stoke, Devonport, Stonehouse, Hartley and Saltash.

Questions people in Plymouth ask

Do I need Gas Safe registration to work on boilers in Plymouth?

Yes. Anyone working on gas appliances for payment must be on the Gas Safe Register, which needs valid ACS certificates for each type of work.

Is there work for heat pump installers in Plymouth too?

The Warm Homes: Local Grant and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme both fund heat pumps in the city, so engineers who add heat pump and F-Gas skills to gas can cover more jobs.
