Gas engineer courses in Sunderland

Where to train for gas work in Sunderland, what the qualifications are and how to get onto the Gas Safe Register.

Sunderland College runs a Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy, known as HICSA, on Hay Street opposite the Stadium of Light. The college says it has facilities for gas training and gas assessment as well as plumbing and electrical work.

Demand is steady. Nearly 98,000 Sunderland households heat with mains gas only, and every rented home needs a yearly gas safety check.

Level 3 Plumbing and Heating

This course runs at HICSA and includes a unit on the principles of gas installations, safety and maintenance. You need GCSE maths and English at grade 4 or above and a relevant Level 2 plumbing and heating qualification.

It's a foundation, not a licence. To work on gas you still need ACS assessments and registration with Gas Safe.

ACS and registration

ACS is the assessment scheme that proves competence in each area of gas work, starting with core domestic safety (CCN1) and then appliance categories such as boilers and cookers. Once you pass, you or your employer register with Gas Safe.

Adult learners without a plumbing background usually follow a managed learning programme with a work placement. Check that the placement is included before you pay.

Where the jobs are

Sunderland's social landlords house 26.6% of the city's households and need gas engineers for servicing, safety checks and repairs across thousands of homes. Private landlords, with 14.8% of households, need annual checks too.

Many new engineers start on servicing and breakdown work under supervision, then move on to installation once they have more ACS categories.

Heat pumps next

Sunderland College also lists a Level 3 course on maintaining air source heat pump systems for qualified plumbers and heating engineers. Adding heat pump skills keeps your options open as more homes move off gas.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Sunderland work across areas including Roker, Seaburn, Fulwell, Ashbrooke, Millfield, Hendon, Southwick, Doxford Park, Washington and Houghton-le-Spring.

Questions people in Sunderland ask

Is there an apprenticeship route?

Yes. The national Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician apprenticeship has a domestic gas specialism. You need an employer willing to take you on.

How long until I can work alone?

That depends on the route. An apprenticeship takes several years; a managed programme is quicker but needs real site experience.

Can I start the HICSA Level 3 course with no trade background?

Not always, but a plumbing and heating background makes the gas units much easier. The HICSA Level 3 course expects a Level 2 plumbing qualification before you start.
