Warm Homes: Local Grant
The home must be privately owned, by you or a private landlord, and rated EPC D to G. Household income must usually be £36,000 or less, though some postcodes and benefits change that. Apply on GOV.UK, and the right council should contact you within about 10 working days.
Funded work can include insulation, heat pumps, solar panels and smart controls, at no cost to you. Landlords may need to pay part.
Council and housing association homes aren't covered. With more than a quarter of Hull households in social housing, many residents will need to ask their landlord about upgrades instead.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme
£7,500 towards an air or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 for air-to-air, with no income test. An MCS certified installer applies for you. Homes on oil or LPG with no gas main get an extra £1,500 until March 2027, which matters more in the East Riding villages than in the city.
ECO4 and GBIS
The Great British Insulation Scheme has ended, and Ofgem says ECO4 runs only until 31 December 2026. Be cautious about cold callers offering work under either scheme.
Grants and Hull's homes
Victorian and Edwardian terraces off the main roads
Solid walls often mean an EPC of D or E, inside the local grant's range. Internal insulation and loft work are likely measures.
Interwar and post-war semis and estate houses
Many ex-council homes now privately owned are eligible. Cavity and loft insulation usually come first.
Bungalows in the villages around the city
Older bungalows in the East Riding villages may be on oil. The national heat pump grant with the £1,500 off-gas top-up is worth a quote.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Hull work across areas including The Avenues, Newland Park, Hessle, Cottingham, Anlaby, Kirk Ella, Willerby, Sutton-on-Hull, Bransholme and Kingswood.
Questions people in Hull ask
Do I need to pay anything upfront?
No. Genuine schemes don't charge to check eligibility. If someone asks for a fee, hang up and contact the council directly.
Do I need an EPC?
Yes, the local grant uses your EPC rating. Look it up on GOV.UK; if it's out of date, apply anyway, as the council can arrange a new assessment.
