Oil boiler servicing in Aberdeen
Oil is rare inside the city but common just beyond it. Every oil boiler needs a yearly service by an OFTEC registered technician.
Only about 650 households in Aberdeen City, 0.6%, heated with oil at the 2022 census. Cross the boundary into Aberdeenshire and the picture changes: 21.3% of households there use oil, around 24,700 homes, more than four times the Scottish rate.
So if you live on the edge of the city, in Westhill or out towards the Deeside and Donside villages, you are in oil country, and there are technicians who know it well.

What the service includes
The technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, fits a new nozzle and filter, checks the flue gases and tests the fire valve and oil supply line. A clean burner wastes less oil and is less likely to lock out on a cold morning.
Gas Safe engineers cannot do this unless they also hold OFTEC qualifications, so check before you book.
Booking around the heating season
Technicians who cover the Aberdeen fringe spend much of their year out in the shire, and diaries fill up fast once the first frosts arrive. Book in late summer or early autumn if you can, so any parts can be ordered before you need the heating every day.
If your boiler also heats the hot water, ask for the cylinder or combi side to be checked on the same visit.
Your tank
Ask for a tank and bund inspection at the same visit. North east winters are hard on plastic tanks left in the open. Our heating oil prices guide helps you time deliveries.
Moving off oil
Home Energy Scotland offers up to £7,500 in grant and an optional £7,500 interest-free loan towards a heat pump. Rural and island homes can get an extra £1,500 uplift. Ask an MCS installer for a heat loss survey before you spend money on a major oil boiler repair.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Aberdeen work across areas including Rosemount, Old Aberdeen, Torry, Ferryhill, Cults, Bieldside, Dyce, Bridge of Don, Kincorth and Westhill.
Questions people in Aberdeen ask
How often should an oil boiler be serviced?
Every year. Oil burners soot up faster than gas, and a worn nozzle can push up fuel use.
Does the rural uplift apply to me?
It depends on how your address is classed under the Scottish Government's urban rural classification. Home Energy Scotland can check for you.
The house I bought has switched to gas but kept its oil tank. Is that a problem?
It can be. Leftover oil in a tank that nobody checks may escape into the ground as the tank ages. A tank decommissioning firm can empty it, clean it and take it away, and you should keep their disposal note for when you sell.
