Oil boiler servicing in Birmingham

Oil heating is rare in Birmingham, but the homes that use it still need a yearly service from an OFTEC registered technician.

The 2021 Census counted just 292 Birmingham households heating with oil alone, about one in 1,450. A further 2,037 used bottled or tank gas. Almost the whole city is on the gas grid, so oil survives mainly in scattered homes that were never connected.

Because the work is thin inside the city, many technicians who come out are based in the surrounding countryside of Worcestershire, Warwickshire or Staffordshire. Book ahead of the first cold snap.

Birmingham at a glance

How homes are heated
74.2% of Birmingham households heat with mains gas only and 11.7% (49,507 homes) with electricity only. 0.6% use a communal or district heat network, and 2.4% (9,995 homes) have no central heating at all. Oil-only heating covers 292 homes. Source

What a service includes

An OFTEC technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, replaces the nozzle and filter, analyses the flue gases and checks the fire valve and supply line. They can also self-certify new oil installations under Building Regulations.

A Gas Safe engineer can't do this work unless they also hold OFTEC qualifications.

Check the tank

Ask for a tank inspection at the same time. Cracked plastic or rusting steel can leak into the ground, and the clean-up costs far more than a new tank. Our heating oil prices guide helps you time a delivery.

Bottled and tank LPG

LPG is more common than oil in Birmingham, with 2,037 homes using bottled or tank gas only in 2021. LPG boilers are gas appliances, so they need a Gas Safe engineer qualified for LPG, not an OFTEC technician. Tell us which fuel you use when you book so we pass the request to the right trade.

Replacing oil

Off-gas homes heated by oil or LPG can get £9,000 towards an air source heat pump until March 2027: the standard £7,500 plus a £1,500 top-up. Ask an MCS installer for a heat loss survey before you spend on a big oil repair.

Questions people in Birmingham ask

Is a yearly service enough for oil in Birmingham?

Every year. Oil burners soot up faster than gas, and a worn nozzle wastes fuel.

There's an old oil tank at a house I've bought. What should I do?

Have a specialist drain and remove it, and keep the disposal paperwork. Forgotten tanks can leak years later.

Can you find an oil technician near me?

Give us your postcode and we pass the request to OFTEC registered technicians who cover it. On the edges of Birmingham that is often a rural firm from a neighbouring county.
