Home Oil boiler servicing Glasgow

Oil boiler servicing in Glasgow

Oil is almost unknown in Glasgow itself, but some homes on the rural edge rely on it. An OFTEC registered technician should service it once a year.

Scotland's Census 2022 counted 183 households in Glasgow City heating with oil, a tiny fraction of the city. Bearsden, in East Dunbartonshire, is similar, at 0.5%. Head south into rural South Lanarkshire, though, and 3.8% of households use oil, about 5,600 homes.

So oil servicing around Glasgow mostly means rural homes beyond the city boundary, where the gas main does not reach.

The service

An OFTEC technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, replaces the nozzle and filters, checks combustion and the flue, and tests the fire valve. Ask for a written record. Gas Safe engineers cannot service oil boilers unless they also hold OFTEC qualifications.

Finding a technician

Give us the full postcode and we pass the request to OFTEC registered technicians who cover it. On Glasgow's edge, that is often a firm based in Lanarkshire, Stirlingshire or Renfrewshire, so book ahead of the winter rush.

Tank care

Have the tank and supply line inspected at the same time. Look for cracks, rust, leaks and a weak base, and keep plants clear around it. Our heating oil prices guide helps with buying.

Changing fuel

If your home could take a heat pump, Home Energy Scotland offers up to £7,500 in grant and an optional £7,500 interest-free loan, with £1,500 more for qualifying rural homes. Get a heat loss survey from an MCS installer before deciding on a costly oil repair.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Glasgow work across areas including Partick, Dennistoun, Shawlands, Hyndland, Govan, Maryhill, Pollokshields, Cathcart, Bearsden and Rutherglen.

Questions people in Glasgow ask

Does an oil boiler near Glasgow need servicing every year?

Yearly. Oil leaves more soot than gas, which builds up and cuts efficiency if left.

Is there a gas supply near me?

Ask your gas network operator. If mains gas is nearby, compare a connection with a heat pump before replacing an oil boiler.

Is a CO alarm required next to an oil boiler in Scotland?

It is. The law covers every carbon-fuelled appliance, so oil boilers need a CO detector in the same room, just as gas ones do.

My tank is old and plastic. Should I replace it?

Ask the technician to check it. Fading, bulging or cracks are signs it is near the end of its life, and a leak is far more expensive than a new tank.
