Oil boiler servicing in Nottingham

Oil-fired heating is rare in Nottingham itself, but common in parts of the county. Here is what you need to know.

Only 65 households in Nottingham city heated with oil alone in the 2021 Census. The city is almost entirely on mains gas, and the council's heat network covers part of the centre. Oil belongs to the county's villages instead. The same Census found 8.3% of households in Bassetlaw and 7.0% in Newark and Sherwood relying on it, against 2.9% in Rushcliffe.

Technicians who service oil boilers mostly work across rural Nottinghamshire. Book early in the autumn.

What the technician does

An OFTEC registered technician cleans the combustion chamber, changes the nozzle and oil filter, checks the flue gases and tests safety controls. They check the oil line from the tank to the boiler, including the fire valve.

Keep the service report. Insurers and boiler manufacturers often ask for it.

The tank

Check the tank yourself every few months. Look for splits, discoloured patches, leaks at the fittings and the condition of the base. If it is close to a drain or watercourse, it may need a bund. Nottinghamshire oil users can time orders with our heating oil prices guide.

Signs it needs attention sooner

Black smoke from the flue, a smell of oil indoors, soot around the terminal or the boiler locking out and needing a reset are all reasons to call a technician without waiting for the annual visit.

A rising oil bill with no change in use often means the burner is out of adjustment.

Grants to switch

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards a heat pump. If your home uses oil or LPG and has no mains gas connection, an extra £1,500 is available until March 2027.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Nottingham work across areas including West Bridgford, Beeston, Wollaton, Sneinton, Lenton, Mapperley, Arnold, Carlton, Bulwell and Hucknall.

Questions people in Nottingham ask

I only have Gas Safe engineers nearby. Will they do?

Only if they also hold OFTEC qualifications. Check the technician's OFTEC registration before booking.

What happens if the oil runs out?

Air can enter the fuel line and the boiler may need bleeding before it will run again. Order before the tank drops below a quarter.

Should I switch to gas instead?

If a gas main runs along your road, a connection may be possible. Ask the gas network for a quote and compare it with a heat pump after grants.
