Smart thermostat installation in Birmingham
Hive, Nest, tado and smart radiator valves, fitted and set up. Check what heats your home before you buy.
Most smart thermostats are designed for gas boilers, which suits the three in four Birmingham homes on mains gas. But almost 50,000 Birmingham households heat with electricity only, many in flats, and the big brands won't run storage heaters.
Birmingham at a glance
- How homes are heated
- 74.2% of Birmingham households heat with mains gas only and 11.7% (49,507 homes) with electricity only. 0.6% use a communal or district heat network, and 2.4% (9,995 homes) have no central heating at all. Oil-only heating covers 292 homes. Source
- Types of home
- 35.6% of Birmingham households live in a semi-detached house, 27.8% in a terrace and 21.0% in a purpose-built block of flats. Only 11.2% live in a detached house. Source
- Who rents
- 23.5% of Birmingham households rent from a social landlord, 13.8% directly from the council. Another 22.6% rent privately. Source
- Local grant
- Birmingham City Council's Warm Homes Local Grant (2025 to 2028) covers only six Retrofit Priority Areas: Balsall Heath, Bromford, Castle Vale, Sparkbrook, Sparkhill, and Tyseley and Hay Mills. Next Energy is upgrading 625 private homes. Homes must be rated EPC D to G. Source
- Energy ratings
- About 53% of homes with an EPC in Birmingham are rated band D or below (median score 68, band D), against 47% across England. Based on certificates lodged in the 10 years to March 2025. Source
Electric-heated homes
If you have storage or panel heaters, look for controls made by the heater's manufacturer or a Wi-Fi panel heater that has scheduling built in. The council's Warm Homes Local Grant lists smart heating controls and high heat retention storage heaters among its measures in priority areas.
Boiler homes
Combi and system boilers work with most smart thermostats through a simple on/off switch. Newer boilers often support OpenTherm, which lets the thermostat lower the flow temperature instead of switching on and off, and saves more gas.
If your boiler has a hot water cylinder, choose a model that controls hot water as well.
Birmingham's moderately soft water has no bearing on the thermostat itself, but a sludged system will still heat slowly whatever the controls say. If rooms take hours to warm up, have the system checked before blaming the new thermostat.
Tenants
Ask your landlord before replacing a wired thermostat. Council and housing association tenants should ask their landlord's repairs team, since they may have a standard control. Wireless kits can be swapped back when you move out.
Private renters make up just over a fifth of Birmingham households, and a plug-in receiver with a battery thermostat is usually the least intrusive choice. Keep the original thermostat safe so it can go back on.
Birmingham homes and what they need
Victorian and Edwardian red brick terraces
Front rooms with bay windows lose heat fast while back rooms stay warm. Smart radiator valves let each room run its own schedule.
Interwar semis in the outer suburbs
The old thermostat is often in a draughty hall. A wireless thermostat moved into the living room gives a truer reading.
Tower blocks and city-centre apartments
On a communal system, ask the managing agent what controls the heat interface unit accepts before buying.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Birmingham work across areas including Edgbaston, Moseley, Kings Heath, Harborne, Erdington, Selly Oak, Hall Green, Sutton Coldfield, Acocks Green and Handsworth.
Questions people in Birmingham ask
Does a gas engineer need to fit it?
Not usually. Wiring to the boiler's control terminals is electrical work. If the sealed boiler casing has to come off, it needs a Gas Safe engineer.
Will it lower my bill?
Only if it changes when and how hot the heating runs. Good schedules and lower flow temperatures do the saving.
Do smart radiator valves fit every radiator?
Most modern thermostatic valve bodies take a smart head directly or with an adapter. Very old valves may need replacing first, which is a small plumbing job, so check the make before ordering a full set.
