Smart thermostat installation in Cardiff
Hive, Nest, tado and smart radiator valves, wired in and set up by an engineer who checks your system first.
A smart thermostat is a cheap upgrade with a quick payback. In Cardiff, where most homes run on a gas boiler, it lets you heat the house only when you're in and turn it down from your phone when plans change.
Cardiff at a glance
- How homes are heated
- 78.4% of Cardiff households heat with mains gas only and 10.4% with electricity only. Oil-only heating covers 209 homes (0.1%), and 456 homes (0.3%) are on a district or communal heat network. Source
- Renting
- 24.3% of Cardiff households rented privately in 2021 and 17.2% rented from the council or a housing association. Source
- Median energy score
- About 42% of homes with an EPC in Cardiff are rated band D or below (median score 70, band C), against 53% across Wales. Based on certificates lodged in the 10 years to March 2025. Source
Check what you have
Combi boilers are the simplest case. Regular and system boilers with a hot water cylinder need a thermostat that also controls hot water, such as the dual-channel versions of Hive or tado.
If your boiler supports OpenTherm, a compatible thermostat can modulate the flame rather than switching it on and off, which saves a little more gas. The engineer can check the model.
Electric heating
Around one in ten Cardiff homes uses electric heating only. Most standard smart thermostats don't control storage heaters. Look for heaters with built-in smart controls, or ask an electrician about compatible systems.
Room-by-room control
Smart radiator valves let you heat bedrooms and living rooms on separate schedules. In a terrace with a cold rear extension, this is often more useful than the thermostat itself.
Don't fit a smart valve on the radiator in the same room as the main thermostat. The two will fight each other.
Settings that save the most
Set the schedule around when you are actually home, and use the app's away mode rather than turning the heating off completely in a cold spell, which risks condensation and frozen pipes.
If you have a condensing combi, ask the engineer to lower the boiler's flow temperature while they are there. Lower flow temperatures let the boiler condense more of the time, and a smart thermostat can then keep the rooms comfortable with longer, gentler heating periods.
Renters
Ask your landlord before changing the wired thermostat. If they agree, keep the old one so it can go back at the end of the contract. Smart radiator valves that screw onto existing bodies are usually easy to swap back.
Cardiff homes and what they need
Victorian bay-fronted terraces
The thermostat is often in a draughty hallway that warms last. Moving it to the living room, or using a wireless model, gives better control.
Interwar and post-war semis in the northern suburbs
If you still have a separate programmer and a cylinder, a smart controller with hot water scheduling replaces both.
Modern apartments around Cardiff Bay and the centre
Flats on electric panel heaters need heaters with their own smart controls. Flats with a combi take a standard smart thermostat.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Cardiff work across areas including Roath, Cathays, Canton, Pontcanna, Grangetown, Splott, Llandaff, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina and Penarth.
Questions people in Cardiff ask
Can I fit a smart thermostat myself?
Some battery models are plug and play. Wired installs that change the boiler connection are best left to an engineer.
Will a smart thermostat work with Cardiff's older boilers?
Most boilers from the last 30 years can be switched by a smart thermostat. Very old boilers with a built-in mechanical timer may need an extra relay, which the engineer will fit.
