Smart thermostat installation in Edinburgh
Hive, Nest, tado and smart radiator valves, fitted and set up by engineers who cover Edinburgh.
Smart heating controls are one of the few upgrades you can make in a listed building or conservation area without anyone's permission. Nothing changes on the outside, and the savings come from heating rooms only when they are used.

Renting? Ask first
With so many Edinburgh homes let privately, a lot of interest comes from tenants. You need the landlord's agreement to change the heating controls. Many landlords are happy to agree if you offer to leave the new thermostat behind, or to put the old one back when you move out.
What fits your system
Gas boilers, which heat 79% of Edinburgh homes, work with almost every smart thermostat. Combis that support OpenTherm can be controlled more finely, turning the flame down rather than just on and off. Ask the engineer whether yours does.
Electric heating is different. About one in ten homes in the city uses it, and old storage heaters need their own controls.
Zoning bigger homes
A townhouse over three or four floors heats very unevenly with one thermostat. Smart radiator valves, or separate zones by floor, keep the bedrooms cooler and the living rooms warm without overheating the whole house.
Setting it up well
Set modest temperatures, around 18 to 21°C in living areas, and lower overnight. Turning the thermostat up high does not heat the flat any faster; it just overshoots. Check the boiler's flow temperature too, since a combi set lower runs more efficiently.
Edinburgh homes and what they need
Stone tenement flats
The old wired thermostat is often in the hall, the coldest part of the flat. A wireless model in the living room gives better control.
Interwar and postwar suburban semis
If you still have a hot water cylinder, choose a thermostat that also schedules hot water.
Georgian and Victorian main-door flats and townhouses
Older radiator valves may need replacing before smart heads will fit. An engineer can check each one.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Edinburgh work across areas including Leith, Morningside, Marchmont, Bruntsfield, Stockbridge, Portobello, Corstorphine, Gorgie, Musselburgh and Dalkeith.
Questions people in Edinburgh ask
Does a smart thermostat need Wi-Fi?
For app control, yes. Most keep following their schedule if the internet drops, but you cannot change settings remotely until it is back.
Which brand is best?
They all control a standard boiler well. Choose based on features you will use, such as room-by-room control, hot water scheduling or OpenTherm support.
Can I take it with me when I move?
Usually yes, if you refit the old controls. Agree this with your landlord first if you rent.
