Smart thermostat installation in Hull
Hive, Nest, tado and smart radiator valves, fitted and set up by an engineer who checks your boiler first.
Four in five Hull homes heat with gas alone, so most can take a smart thermostat on the boiler they already have. In a two-up two-down terrace, one well-placed thermostat with a sensible schedule does most of what you need. The bigger gains come from how you set it up.

Where to put it
In a terrace, the thermostat often sits in the hallway by the front door, where draughts make it read low and the heating runs longer than needed. Moving it to the main living room, away from the kitchen and direct sun, gives a truer reading. Wireless models make that easy.
Renting
Over half of Hull households rent. If you're a tenant, ask your landlord before replacing the thermostat; it's their fixture. Some landlords are happy for tenants to fit a smart model and leave it behind when they go. You can always use smart radiator valves, which screw onto existing valves and come off without tools.
Hot water and hard water
If you have a cylinder, choose a thermostat that schedules hot water too. Keeping the cylinder at around 60°C, rather than hotter, slows scale build-up in Hull's hard water while still controlling bacteria.
Electric heating
About 7% of Hull homes use electricity only. Standard smart thermostats don't control storage heaters; look for heaters with their own smart controls.
Heating a terrace efficiently
Hull's terraces are often long and narrow, with a front room that's rarely used and a back kitchen where the family spends most of its time. Smart radiator valves let you keep the front room cool and heat the rooms you use. In a three-bedroom terrace, valves on the bedrooms and front room plus a thermostat in the living area is a sensible set-up.
Ask the engineer to check the boiler's flow temperature as well. Many are set higher than needed, which wastes gas on a condensing boiler.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Hull work across areas including The Avenues, Newland Park, Hessle, Cottingham, Anlaby, Kirk Ella, Willerby, Sutton-on-Hull, Bransholme and Kingswood.
Questions people in Hull ask
Do I need an engineer?
For anything inside the boiler, a Gas Safe engineer. Some wireless thermostats can be fitted without opening it.
Will a smart thermostat save money?
Usually some, by heating only when you're in. Lowering the boiler's flow temperature at the same visit adds to the saving.
Does it need Wi-Fi?
For the app and remote control, yes. Without internet it keeps running its schedule, and you can still change the temperature on the wall unit.
I'm moving house. Does the thermostat stay?
Usually, if it's yours. Put the old thermostat back and check the heating works before you go.
