Home Ventilation installation Luton

Ventilation installation in Luton

From extractor fans to whole-house ventilation, we pass your request to installers who cover Luton.

Luton has seen first-hand what happens when insulation goes wrong. The council says the town is one of the top five areas in England for poor insulation work under government schemes. In some homes, walls were insulated without proper detailing or ventilation, and damp and mould followed.

Ventilation isn't the whole answer to bad installation, but it's a big part of keeping any well-insulated home healthy.

Luton at a glance

Semis dominate
40.3% of Luton households live in a semi-detached house, against 31.5% in England. 22.0% live in a terrace, 20.5% in a purpose-built flat and 12.9% in a detached house. Source

If insulation caused damp

If damp or mould appeared after insulation was fitted under ECO4 or the Great British Insulation Scheme, report it to Luton Council using its insulation concerns form or by email. TrustMark's Find and Fix service surveys affected homes and asks the original installer to put things right. Don't pay someone else to cover it up first.

Extractor fans

Every kitchen and bathroom should have a fan that meets Part F of the Building Regulations. Fans should vent outside and run on after use or on a humidity sensor. A fan buried at the end of a long flexible duct may move very little air.

Background ventilation

Trickle vents in window frames and clear airbricks give a home a steady trickle of fresh air without opening windows. Replacement windows fitted without vents, and airbricks blocked to stop draughts, are among the most common causes of condensation in Luton's older houses.

Whole-house options

Positive input ventilation from the loft suits many semis and terraces with condensation problems. MVHR suits well-sealed newer homes and deep retrofits. Ask the installer to measure airflow when they commission it.

Heatwaves

Good ventilation helps a home cool overnight in a heatwave like July 2022's. Secure night ventilation, such as lockable window restrictors, lets you leave windows open safely.

Luton homes and what they need

1930s and post-war semis

If cavity walls were filled and you now see damp patches, the insulation may be bridging moisture. Report it before adding fans.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the town centre

Solid walls with external or internal insulation need careful ventilation. Check airbricks and trickle vents weren't blocked during the work.

Newer estate houses

Check that built-in extract fans are switched on and their filters or grilles are clean.

Questions people in Luton ask

Do I need building regulations approval for a new fan?

Replacing a fan like for like doesn't usually need approval. New installations should still meet Part F extract rates, and an electrician must follow the wiring regulations.
