Air conditioning installation in Bradford
Split systems for hot bedrooms and offices, fitted by F-Gas certified engineers who cover the Bradford district.
Bradford's weather station has records going back 134 years. On 19 July 2022 it reached 37.9°C, smashing its previous highest temperature by 4.0°C. For a hilltop city used to cool summers, that was a shock.
Most Bradford homes cope well with heat because thick stone walls absorb it slowly. Attic bedrooms under the roof and modern flats are the exceptions, and that's where cooling requests usually come from.

Cooling on a budget
Keep curtains or blinds shut on sunny sides during the day, open windows at night, and use a fan. Stone houses stay cool for days if you stop the heat getting in. If a room still won't cool, a split unit is the efficient option.
Who can fit it
Split systems use refrigerant gas, and the law says only an F-Gas certified engineer can handle it. Ask for the certificate number and a commissioning record.
If you want heating as well as cooling, an air-to-air heat pump replacing fossil fuel heating can get £2,500 from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
Planning on stone houses
Outdoor units on the front of a house, or anywhere in a conservation area, may need planning permission. In Saltaire most buildings are listed, so any unit needs listed building consent. Check with Bradford Council before you book.
What the installer needs to know
Tell them the room size, which way the windows face, and how the room is used. A bedroom under the roof facing west needs more cooling than a north-facing office. They'll also want to see where the outdoor unit can sit and how the pipes will reach it.
Ask for the condensate drain route too. On a stone wall it's easy to leave a drip stain down the face, which looks bad on a period house.
Air conditioning in Bradford homes
Stone-built terraces and back-to-backs
Attic rooms under slate get hottest. Drilling through thick stone for the pipes takes longer, so expect that to show in the quote.
Interwar and post-war semis
The outdoor unit can usually sit at the side or back. Keep it a sensible distance from the neighbour's bedroom window.
Large Victorian stone houses
A multi-split with one outdoor unit serving several rooms keeps the outside of the house tidy.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Bradford work across areas including Heaton, Manningham, Shipley, Saltaire, Bingley, Baildon, Idle, Eccleshill, Thornton and Wibsey.
Questions people in Bradford ask
Can I fit it myself?
Not legally, unless it's a sealed portable unit. Anything with refrigerant pipes needs an F-Gas engineer.
Does air conditioning help with damp?
A split unit dehumidifies as it cools, so it can make a muggy room feel better. It's not a fix for damp walls; that needs the source sorting.
