Air conditioning in Huddersfield
Split and multi-split air conditioning, fitted by F-Gas certified engineers who cover Huddersfield and the valleys.
The hills around Huddersfield usually keep summer nights cool. July 2022 broke that rule. On the night of 18 to 19 July, the Met Office recorded a minimum of 24.6°C at Emley Moor, 259 metres up, while some lower sites nearby fell to 15°C. Warm air trapped above a cooler layer kept the high ground hot all night.

Who needs cooling here
Most stone houses stay comfortable through a normal summer. The rooms that overheat are attic bedrooms, home offices with big windows, and top-floor flats in converted mills, where heat gathers under the roof.
Try shading and night-time ventilation first. If a room still sits too hot to sleep in, a split system is the efficient choice.
F-Gas rules
Split and multi-split systems contain refrigerant, and the law says only an F-Gas certified engineer can install or work on them. Ask for proof of certification and a commissioning sheet.
If the system will also heat the home and replace fossil fuel heating, an air-to-air heat pump can get £2,500 from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
Getting permission
Outdoor units on a house front or in a conservation area may need planning permission from Kirklees Council. In a mill conversion, the management company or freeholder must agree to anything fixed to the walls.
Size and running costs
Get the installer to size the unit for the room, not just pick a standard model. Too big and it cycles on and off; too small and it runs flat out. A properly sized split system used on hot evenings costs far less to run than a portable unit doing the same job.
Fitting AC in Huddersfield homes
Stone-built terraces and cottages
Thick walls make the pipe route slower to drill. The outdoor unit usually goes in the back yard or on a bracket on a rear wall.
Interwar and postwar semis
A single split for the main bedroom is the common job. Side walls make a tidy spot for the outdoor unit.
Mill conversions and town-centre flats
Large windows and top-floor positions make these the hottest homes in town. External units may be banned, so check the lease before getting quotes.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Huddersfield work across areas including Lindley, Marsh, Edgerton, Almondbury, Lockwood, Birkby, Fartown, Newsome, Holmfirth and Marsden.
Questions people in Huddersfield ask
Is a portable air conditioner worth it?
As a stopgap for one room, maybe. They're noisy and less efficient, and the hose lets warm air back in through the window gap.
Can the same unit heat in winter?
Yes. Most split systems are air-to-air heat pumps and can heat as well as cool. In a cold valley winter they're useful as a top-up in one room.
