Air conditioning in Sheffield
Split-system air conditioning from F-Gas certified engineers covering Sheffield.
Sheffield has one of the longest-running weather records in the country, at Weston Park. On 19 July 2022 it reached 39.4°C, smashing the station's previous record by 3.8°C after 138 years of observations. Heat that had once seemed impossible this far north is now on record.
For most Sheffield homes, hot spells are still short. But a top-floor flat or a south-facing attic bedroom can stay uncomfortable for days.

Is air conditioning worth it?
If you work from home, sleep badly in the heat or care for someone vulnerable to it, a split unit in one room can be worth the cost. It cools quietly and much more effectively than a fan.
Most split units are air-to-air heat pumps, so they also heat efficiently in winter. That makes them more useful in Sheffield's climate than a cooling-only unit.
Try passive cooling
Shade windows from outside, close curtains on sunny sides during the day and open windows at night. On a hillside, cool air often flows downhill after dark; opening windows on the uphill and downhill sides creates a through draught.
Sizing and placement
A unit that is too small runs flat out and still struggles on the hottest afternoons. One that is too big cools in short bursts and leaves the air clammy. The installer should size it from the room's floor area, windows and sun exposure, not just pick a standard model.
On sloping plots, the outdoor unit may sit well above or below the indoor head. Long vertical pipe runs are possible but need checking against the maker's limits.
Consent and installation
Renters need written permission from their landlord. Leaseholders need the freeholder's consent. In conservation areas, outdoor units on front walls may need approval. The engineer must hold an F-Gas certificate.
Sheffield homes and what they need
Victorian terraces on the hillsides
Attic bedrooms heat up fast. A small split unit with the outdoor unit on the rear wall is often the simplest answer.
Interwar and postwar semis
Side walls give short pipe runs. One outdoor unit can serve two bedrooms with a multi-split.
Large stone villas in the western suburbs
Thick stone walls keep ground floors cool. Upper floors and conservatories are the usual targets.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Sheffield work across areas including Crookes, Walkley, Hillsborough, Ecclesall, Nether Edge, Broomhill, Sharrow, Heeley, Dore and Stocksbridge.
Questions people in Sheffield ask
How much does it cost to run?
Cooling one room for a few hours uses a modest amount of electricity. Ask for the SEER rating of each model; higher is better.
Will it be noisy for my neighbours?
In close-packed terraces, noise carries. Ask for the outdoor unit's sound level and place it where it faces away from neighbouring bedroom windows.
