Air conditioning in Nottingham
Split-system air conditioning fitted by F-Gas certified engineers who cover Nottingham.
Nottinghamshire reached 40.1°C at Gringley-on-the-Hill on 19 July 2022, among the highest readings anywhere in the UK that day. City-centre flats with large south-facing windows and top-floor rooms in brick terraces are where Nottingham people feel it most.
About 23.5% of the city's households live in flats, and many of them can't open windows wide or create a through draught. That is where a split air conditioner earns its keep.

Split or portable?
A split system puts the noisy compressor outside and cools quietly. A portable unit sits in the room and vents through a window. It needs no installer, but it is louder, less efficient and lets warm air back in around the hose.
Splits need an F-Gas certified engineer to connect the refrigerant pipes. Ask to see the certificate.
Ceiling cassettes and ducted systems suit larger open-plan spaces, but they need more building work and are more common in offices than homes.
Consent
Over half of Nottingham households rent, and most will need the landlord's written permission to fix a unit to the wall. Leaseholders need the freeholder's consent. In the Lace Market conservation area and on listed buildings, the council may need to approve anything on the outside.
Heating too
A split unit is an air-to-air heat pump, so it can heat in winter at low cost. If it replaces fossil fuel heating, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme may contribute £2,500.
Nottingham homes and what they need
Victorian terraces
The rear wall or yard is the usual spot for the outdoor unit. Pipework can run along the outside and through the wall into the bedroom.
Interwar and post-war semis
Hipped roofs make lofts hot in summer. Cool the main bedroom with a split unit and add loft insulation to slow heat coming in.
City-centre flats and warehouse conversions
Balconies often provide the only place for the condenser. Check the block's rules; some ban external units and offer ceiling cassettes connected to a roof plant instead.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Nottingham work across areas including West Bridgford, Beeston, Wollaton, Sneinton, Lenton, Mapperley, Arnold, Carlton, Bulwell and Hucknall.
Questions people in Nottingham ask
How long does installation take?
One room usually takes half a day to a day. The engineer needs access inside and out.
Will it make my electricity bill much higher?
For a few hours of night-time cooling, the cost is modest. Ask for the seasonal efficiency rating (SEER) of each model quoted.
