Air conditioning installation in Doncaster

Split-system air conditioning installed by F-Gas certified engineers covering Doncaster.

On 19 July 2022, Gringley-on-the-Hill, about a dozen miles south-east of Doncaster across the Nottinghamshire border, recorded 40.1°C. It was one of the highest readings in the UK that day. The low, flat land around Doncaster had no relief from it.

Most homes in Doncaster are semis, detached houses and bungalows, which makes fitting a split system more straightforward than in a block of flats.

How a split system works

An indoor unit on the wall cools the room, and an outdoor unit outside rejects the heat. They are joined by refrigerant pipes through a small hole in the wall. Only an F-Gas certified engineer can connect and charge the system.

Most split units also heat efficiently in winter, as an air-to-air heat pump. If a unit replaces fossil fuel heating, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme may contribute £2,500.

Bungalows and older residents

Older people are more at risk in heatwaves, and many live in bungalows. A single split unit in a living room or bedroom can make a real difference to safety during hot spells.

Fit blinds or shutters on south and west windows and top up loft insulation too. Bungalows have a large roof area relative to floor area, so heat comes in from above.

Sizing and running costs

An installer should size the unit from the room's floor area, windows and how much sun it gets. Too small and it runs flat out on the hottest days; too big and it cools in short bursts, leaving the air clammy.

For a few hours of cooling a day, running costs are modest. Ask for the seasonal efficiency figures (SEER for cooling, SCOP for heating) of each model quoted so you can compare.

Permission

Most Doncaster households own their home, so they can decide for themselves. Renters need the landlord's written consent. Check any estate covenants about fixtures on the front of the house.

Doncaster homes and what they need

Interwar and postwar semis

The side wall is often the easiest route for pipes. A multi-split can serve two bedrooms from one outdoor unit.

Red-brick terraces in town and the former pit villages

The rear wall or yard is the usual place for the condenser. Think about noise for neighbours on both sides.

Bungalows

The outdoor unit can sit at ground level close to the indoor unit, keeping pipe runs short and installation simple.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Doncaster work across areas including Bessacarr, Balby, Armthorpe, Bentley, Wheatley, Hatfield, Thorne, Mexborough, Conisbrough and Tickhill.
