Air conditioning installation in Dundee

Split units for rooms that overheat, or air-to-air systems that heat most of the year. All installers we pass jobs to must hold F-Gas certification.

Scotland's highest recorded temperature is 34.8°C, at Charterhall in the Borders on 19 July 2022. Dundee rarely gets close, and most homes here will not need cooling. Enquiries tend to come from people who want efficient heating from the same unit, or from rooms that trap sun.

Almost half of Dundee households live in flats, so the practical questions are usually where the outdoor unit can go and who needs to agree to it.

Housing types
47.3% of Dundee City households live in a flat, against 34.4% across Scotland. Semi-detached houses account for 26.7% of households. Source

Heating first, cooling second

A split air conditioner run in heating mode is an air-to-air heat pump. For a home on old electric heaters, one in the main living room can heat it far more cheaply than a panel heater. It will not heat hot water, so you still need an immersion or other supply for that.

Ask the installer for the unit's heating efficiency figure, not just its cooling rating.

Rooms that overheat

Loft rooms, home offices full of computers and south-facing flats on the Tay can get uncomfortable on sunny days. Try blinds, shading and ventilation first, and add cooling if that is not enough.

Installation rules

Anyone handling refrigerant must be F-Gas certified. The outdoor unit needs a stable mount, a drain for condensate and a dedicated electrical supply. Check with Dundee City Council planning before putting a unit on the front of a building in a conservation area.

Dundee homes and what they need

Victorian stone tenements

Most enquiries for flats need the other owners' consent for a unit on a shared wall. A rear elevation is usually easier.

Four-in-a-block and postwar flats

Short pipe runs to an outside wall keep the cost down. Upper-floor units need safe access for future maintenance.

Suburban semis and bungalows

Easy installs with the outdoor unit at ground level. A multi-split can serve two or three rooms from one outdoor unit.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Dundee work across areas including Broughty Ferry, West End, Lochee, Stobswell, Hilltown, Menzieshill, Downfield, Fintry, Douglas and Monifieth.

Questions people in Dundee ask

How noisy is the outdoor unit?

Modern units are quiet, but placement matters. Keep it away from neighbours' bedroom windows and off thin walls that can carry vibration.

Does it need servicing?

Yes. Filters need cleaning every few months, and an F-Gas engineer should check the system regularly.

Do I need planning permission for a unit in Dundee?

Often not for a single unit on a house, but rules are tighter in conservation areas and on listed buildings. Ask the council before fixing anything to a front wall.
