Air conditioning installation in Edinburgh

Split air conditioning for rooms that overheat, or air-to-air units that also heat. Installers we pass jobs to must hold F-Gas certification.

Edinburgh summers are usually mild, and the Scottish temperature record is 34.8°C, set at Charterhall in the Borders on 19 July 2022. Cooling demand in the city comes mainly from top-floor flats under slate roofs, home offices and modern flats with large glazed walls.

Scottish permitted development for an air source heat pump does not apply within a World Heritage Site or the curtilage of a listed building. In a conservation area the unit must be at ground floor level on the rear elevation. Source

Planning comes first

An outdoor unit is visible on the building, and in Edinburgh that matters. Within the World Heritage Site, in conservation areas and on listed buildings, check with the City of Edinburgh Council before fixing anything to an outside wall. A unit on a rear wall, out of public view, is much easier to get agreed than one facing the street.

Flats

Most Edinburgh households live in flats. Anything on a shared wall or roof usually needs the other owners' consent under the title deeds or the Tenement Management Scheme. Get agreement in writing before paying a deposit.

Modern flats sometimes have a balcony with space for a small unit. Check the building's rules with the factor.

Cooling and heating

A split system is an air-to-air heat pump, so it can heat efficiently in winter as well as cool in summer. For a flat on old electric heaters, that can be the main reason to fit one. It will not heat your hot water.

Choosing an installer

Ask for the F-Gas certificate number, the unit's noise level and where the condensate will drain. A good installer will also tell you honestly if shading or ventilation would solve the problem for less money.

Edinburgh homes and what they need

Stone tenement flats

Top-floor flats under the roof get warmest. Loft insulation and blinds come first, then a small split unit if needed.

Interwar and postwar suburban semis

Planning is usually simpler here. A unit on the back or side wall serving a bedroom or office is a quick install.

Georgian and Victorian main-door flats and townhouses

Thick walls keep these homes cool in summer. Cooling is rarely needed, and planning restrictions often make it hard to justify.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Edinburgh work across areas including Leith, Morningside, Marchmont, Bruntsfield, Stockbridge, Portobello, Corstorphine, Gorgie, Musselburgh and Dalkeith.

Questions people in Edinburgh ask

Would a portable unit be enough for an Edinburgh flat?

Yes, for occasional hot days. It needs a hose out of a window and is less efficient, but there is nothing to fix to the building.

Will an air-to-air system count towards Scottish heat pump funding?

Do not assume so. Home Energy Scotland's scheme is built around heating systems that serve radiators or underfloor pipes and hot water, so confirm before ordering.
