Air conditioning installation in Stoke-on-Trent

Split systems and air-to-air heat pumps, fitted by F-Gas certified engineers covering Stoke-on-Trent.

Few homes in Stoke-on-Trent are flats, under one in ten, so most AC requests here are for a single hot room in a house: a loft conversion, a conservatory or a home office. That usually means one small split unit rather than whole-house cooling.

The July 2022 heatwave broke the Midlands record at 40.2°C, set at Pitsford in Northamptonshire. Upstairs rooms under uninsulated roofs are the first to become unbearable in weather like that.

Stoke-on-Trent at a glance

Types of home
46.1% of Stoke-on-Trent households live in a semi-detached house and 27.6% in a terrace. Only 9.2% live in a purpose-built block of flats, and 15.0% in a detached house. Source
Heat pump planning
One air source heat pump of up to 1.5 cubic metres is normally permitted development on a semi or terrace, provided it meets MCS 020a. Listed buildings need consent. Source

Is it worth it?

Try cheaper fixes first. Shade south and west windows from outside, close curtains during the day and ventilate at night. Topping up loft insulation keeps upstairs cooler in summer as well as warmer in winter.

If those aren't enough, a wall-mounted split unit is far more efficient and quieter than a portable one.

Heat and cool with one unit

In a Stoke-on-Trent home, an air-to-air heat pump gives cooling in summer and warmth in winter. If it replaces fossil fuel heating, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £2,500 towards it.

Sizing and servicing

Ask the installer to size the indoor unit for the room's floor area, glazing and orientation. A unit that's too big cools fast, switches off and leaves the air damp; one that's too small runs flat out on the hottest afternoons.

Clean the indoor filters every few weeks in summer, and have the system checked periodically by an F-Gas engineer. A refrigerant leak slowly cuts cooling power.

Permission and fitting

Air conditioning doesn't have its own permitted development right, so check with the council's planning team before installing an outdoor unit, especially on a listed building or in a conservation area.

Only F-Gas certified engineers may handle refrigerant. Ask for their certificate and company registration, and expect a dedicated electrical circuit in the quote.

Stoke-on-Trent homes and what they need

Interwar and postwar semis

A side or rear wall away from neighbours' windows works well. Keep the unit off the shared boundary.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces across the six towns

Rear bedrooms and loft rooms get hottest. The condenser can sit in the yard or on a flat-roofed back extension.

Newer estates and regeneration housing

Well-insulated homes hold heat on hot nights. Check any estate covenants about external equipment before buying.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Stoke-on-Trent work across areas including Hanley, Burslem, Tunstall, Stoke, Fenton, Longton, Trentham, Meir, Bucknall and Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Questions people in Stoke-on-Trent ask

How much does it cost to run?

A modern inverter split unit cooling one room uses modest electricity. Ask for the seasonal efficiency rating to compare models.

Can I fit a split unit myself?

Not legally, for a standard split system. Connecting and commissioning the refrigerant circuit is work for an F-Gas certified engineer, and most manufacturers' warranties depend on it.
