New boiler installation in Bristol

Fixed quotes from Gas Safe registered installers who cover Bristol, with the flue and system designed around your home.

Bristol's mix of hillside terraces, converted flats and suburban semis means there is no single right boiler. The flue route often decides the job, especially in flats in older buildings.

Flats and flues

In a converted flat, a compact combi is usually the only option. The new flue must meet current rules on distance from windows, doors and boundaries, which can be tricky on older buildings with many openings. Leaseholders may need freeholder consent for any change to the outside wall.

If the existing flue runs through a void, the installer must make sure it can be inspected. Ask how they will handle that.

Houses

One-bathroom terraces suit a combi. Semis on the outskirts with two bathrooms are better served by a system boiler and unvented cylinder, which also leaves space for a heat pump later.

Scale protection

Bristol Water says its whole area is moderately hard to very hard. Building Regulations guidance calls for scale protection on new combis where hardness is above 200 mg/l. A magnetic filter is also standard. Both should be on the quote.

Other options

If you live in central Bristol, ask whether your building could connect to the heat network, which Vattenfall is expanding across Temple, Old Market and Redcliffe. For houses with outdoor space, get a heat pump quote too; the Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500.

Bristol homes and what they need

Victorian terraces on the city's hills

A combi in the kitchen or loft is usual. If moving it to the loft, check access for future servicing.

Flats in converted Georgian and Victorian houses

Compact combis are standard. Measure the cupboard and check flue options before choosing a model.

Interwar and post-war semis on the outskirts

A system boiler and unvented cylinder suit larger households and keep heat pump options open.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Bristol work across areas including Clifton, Bedminster, Southville, Bishopston, Redland, Easton, Fishponds, Horfield, Kingswood and Keynsham.

Questions people in Bristol ask

Are there grants for a new boiler?

Not generally. Ofgem confirms the Great British Insulation Scheme closed in March 2026. Grants now focus on insulation and heat pumps.

How long does it take?

A like-for-like combi swap is usually a day. Moving a boiler, changing the flue route or removing a cylinder and loft tanks can take two to three days.

Who signs off the work?

Your Gas Safe installer registers the job, and you receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate by post. Keep it with the warranty paperwork, as you will need it if you sell.
