Boiler repair in Cambridge

Tell us the fault and we forward it to Gas Safe registered engineers who repair boilers around Cambridge.

Many Cambridge boiler faults trace back to the water. With supply averaging over 300 mg/l of calcium carbonate in the city's northern zone, scale builds on heat exchangers, sensors and valves. That leads to a few familiar symptoms engineers here see often.

Cambridge at a glance

Water hardness
Very hard. Cambridge Water's 2025 report for its Cambridge City North zone gives an average of 334.6 mg/l calcium carbonate (23.4 degrees Clark). Source
Renting
31.4% of Cambridge households rented privately in 2021 and 22.7% rented from the council or a housing association. Only 44.1% owned their home. Source

Faults that point to scale

Hot water that goes from scalding to lukewarm mid-shower usually means a scaled plate heat exchanger or a faulty diverter valve. Kettling, a rumbling noise from the boiler when it heats, means scale is restricting water flow through the main heat exchanger.

A descale or replacement of the plate heat exchanger is a common repair in very hard water areas. Ask the engineer to fit a scale reducer at the same time if there is none.

Simple checks first

Check the boiler pressure. Below 1 bar can trigger a lockout, and our boiler pressure guide explains how to top up.

Reset the boiler once. If it locks out again, note the fault code and stop; repeated resets can make some faults worse.

In frosty weather, check the condensate pipe outside. A frozen pipe stops the boiler and can be thawed with warm water.

Gas smell or CO alarm

Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Turn off the gas at the meter if you can safely, open windows and leave. Do not use switches.

Renters

More than half of Cambridge households rent. Repairs to heating and hot water are your landlord's job. Report the fault in writing, and if it is not fixed in a reasonable time, contact Cambridge City Council's private sector housing team.

Questions people in Cambridge ask

Is my boiler worth repairing?

For a boiler under ten years old, usually yes. For an older one with a failed main heat exchanger, get a replacement quote too. Our new boiler cost guide gives typical prices.

How do I know the engineer is qualified?

Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check the back for boiler work. You can also check the number on the Gas Safe Register.

Why does my combi bang when I run a tap?

That kettling sound is water boiling in tight, scaled passages inside the heat exchanger. It is common in very hard water. An engineer can descale or replace the part and fit protection so it does not return quickly.
