Boiler repair in Plymouth

Tell us what's wrong and we pass the job to Gas Safe registered engineers who work in your part of Plymouth.

More than four in five Plymouth homes depend on a gas boiler. When it stops, the cause is usually a worn part rather than scale, because the city's soft water from Dartmoor reservoirs leaves little limescale behind.

Plymouth at a glance

Water hardness
Soft. South West Water says most of its supply comes from moorland rivers and reservoirs and is soft or moderately soft; East Devon, served by boreholes, is the only area it treats as hard. For soft water it lists no special requirements for boilers and central heating. Source
Renting
22.6% of Plymouth households rented privately in 2021 and 18.4% rented from the council or a housing association. Source

If you smell gas

Turn off the gas at the meter, open windows, avoid switches and flames, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. If anyone feels unwell and you suspect carbon monoxide, get them outside and call for medical help.

Before you book

Check the pressure gauge. If it's below 1 bar, top up with the filling loop following our boiler pressure guide, then reset the boiler.

In freezing weather, a condensate pipe running outside can ice up and stop the boiler. Pour warm water along the pipe and reset. Plymouth's mild coastal climate means this happens less often than inland, but exposed hilltop homes can still be caught out.

Typical faults

Pumps, fans, diverter valves, printed circuit boards, ignition leads and pressure sensors account for most repairs. Sludge from corroded radiators blocks filters and heat exchangers in older systems.

Note the boiler make and model and any fault code, and tell the engineer when you book. They can then bring the most likely parts.

If the same fault keeps returning, ask the engineer whether a magnetic filter or a system flush would stop it, rather than replacing the same part twice.

Renting in Plymouth

About four in ten Plymouth households rent. Landlords must keep the heating and hot water in working order. Put the fault to your landlord or agent by email or letter so there's a dated record. Social tenants should use their landlord's repairs line, which should treat a total loss of heating in winter as urgent.

Plymouth homes and what they need

Interwar and postwar semis

Regular boilers with cylinders have extra parts that can fail, like motorised valves. Tell the engineer whether you've lost heating, hot water or both.

Victorian terraces on the hills

Older pipework can leak slowly under floors, causing pressure loss. Mention how often you top up the pressure.

Waterfront and city-centre flats

Many city-centre flats use electric heating. If yours has a gas boiler with a long concealed flue, the engineer may need ceiling access to check it.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Plymouth work across areas including Plympton, Plymstock, Mutley, Mannamead, Peverell, Stoke, Devonport, Stonehouse, Hartley and Saltash.

Questions people in Plymouth ask

Should I repair or replace an old boiler in Plymouth?

If the part is available and the boiler is otherwise sound, repair is usually cheaper. A failed heat exchanger on an older model is the usual tipping point, so weigh that repair quote against the figures in our new boiler cost guide.

Will a Plymouth engineer charge for a call-out?

Most charge a call-out or first-hour fee, then parts. Ask for the rate when you book, and whether it changes in the evening or at weekends.
