Boiler service in Gloucester
Gloucester is a city of semis, and many still have a cylinder and a separate boiler. Tell us your postcode and we send your request to Gas Safe registered engineers who work across Gloucester.
Four in ten Gloucester households lived in a semi-detached house at the 2021 Census, the largest share of any house type in the city. Plenty of those homes from the 1930s to the 1960s kept a conventional system with a hot water cylinder, even after the boiler was replaced. A service that only looks at the boiler misses half the system.
A yearly visit keeps the boiler safe and within warranty, and it is the cheapest point at which to catch a worn pump or a weeping valve.

Ask for the whole system to be checked
On a system with a cylinder, ask the engineer to look at the cylinder thermostat, the motorised valve and the pump as well as the boiler. These parts fail more often than the boiler and can leave you with heating but no hot water.
If there is a cold water tank and a small expansion tank in the loft, ask for a quick look at both. Lids should be fitted and pipes lagged against frost.
Know your water
Severn Trent supplies Gloucester and lets you look up hardness for your postcode on its website. Do it before the service. If your water is in the hard range and you have a combi, ask whether a scale reducer is fitted and working.
Landlords and tenants
Just over a fifth of Gloucester homes are let privately. Landlords must have a Gas Safe engineer check every gas appliance and flue once a year and give tenants a copy. Ask for a full service at the same visit; the safety check alone does not clean or maintain the boiler.
If you rent, your landlord arranges and pays for the check. Make sure someone can let the engineer in.
Gloucester homes and what they need
1930s to 1960s semis
The boiler may be in the kitchen with the cylinder upstairs. Clear the airing cupboard as well as the boiler cupboard so the engineer can reach both.
Victorian terraces near the centre
Narrow houses in Kingsholm and Tredworth often have the flue at the back. Make sure the engineer can get to the yard or garden to inspect it.
Newer estates on the south and east edges
Homes in Quedgeley, Kingsway and Abbeydale usually have a combi or system boiler still under warranty. Have the paperwork handy so the service can be logged correctly.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Gloucester work across areas including Kingsholm, Longlevens, Hucclecote, Barnwood, Abbeydale, Tuffley, Tredworth, Barton, Quedgeley and Kingsway.
Questions people in Gloucester ask
What if my boiler is in the garage?
That is common on newer estates. Clear space around it, and check the condensate pipe is protected from frost, since garage pipes freeze more easily.
Where can I read about what a service covers?
Our boiler service guide lists the standard checks and what to ask the engineer.
