Apprenticeships in Wales
Wales runs its own apprenticeship frameworks. Cardiff and Vale College offers a Level 3 Plumbing and Heating apprenticeship at its City Centre, Dumballs Road and Barry sites, taking three to four years. You need to be employed by a plumbing or heating firm.
Plumbing and heating is often the first step. Gas units and ACS assessment can follow, either within an employer's training plan or as a separate course.
Career changers
If you are over 19 and live in Wales, Personal Learning Accounts can fund some short courses. Coleg y Cymoedd, north of Cardiff, has run a funded New to Gas managed learning programme under this scheme, ending in an ACS assessment. Check with the college for current intakes.
Managed learning programmes need you to build a portfolio of work supervised by a Gas Safe engineer. Arrange that placement before you enrol.
Related skills
Cardiff and Vale College also runs F-Gas and heat pump installer courses. As more Welsh homes move to heat pumps under Nest and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, engineers with both gas and heat pump skills cover more work.
From ACS to Gas Safe registration
After passing the core gas safety assessment, known as CCN1, you add appliance assessments such as CENWAT for boilers and water heaters. Each certificate lasts five years, then you are reassessed.
With valid certificates you, or the business you work for, can register with the Gas Safe Register. Only then can you work on gas appliances for customers. Cardiff and Vale College also lists ACS assessments for LPG for engineers who want to cover off-grid homes.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Cardiff work across areas including Roath, Cathays, Canton, Pontcanna, Grangetown, Splott, Llandaff, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina and Penarth.
Questions people in Cardiff ask
How long does it take to qualify?
An apprenticeship takes three to four years. A managed learning programme for career changers can take several months, depending on how quickly you build your portfolio.
What is ACS?
The Accredited Certification Scheme assesses gas competence. You need a valid ACS certificate for each type of work before you can register with Gas Safe.
Do I need a job to start a gas apprenticeship in Cardiff?
Yes. Welsh apprenticeships are built around paid work, so you need an employer before you enrol. Colleges can sometimes help match learners with firms.
