Gas engineer courses in Swansea
The training routes in Swansea for school leavers, plumbers and career changers who want to work on gas, oil and LPG heating.
Swansea is well served for heating training. Gower College Swansea runs gas, oil and LPG courses, and the local housing stock gives engineers a mix of work: mains gas in most of the city, and oil and LPG on Gower and the rural edges.

The apprenticeship
Gower College Swansea offers a Gas and Central Heating Engineer Level 3 apprenticeship for school leavers and experienced workers new to gas. It leads to Gas Safe registration in the core safety category, CCN1, and CENWAT for boilers and water heaters, and also covers water regulations and unvented hot water.
You must be employed by a Gas Safe registered company, work more than 16 hours a week and be based in Wales to get apprenticeship funding. The college recommends three GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and maths.
Routes for career changers
The college's gas managed learning programme is for people with little gas experience. It covers legislation, pipework, tightness testing, combustion, flues and unsafe situations, and prepares you for the initial ACS assessment. You need access to on-the-job experience with a Gas Safe registered engineer to build your portfolio.
Oil, LPG and heat pumps
With hundreds of oil-heated homes around Gower and Clydach, OFTEC skills are useful locally. Gower College runs OFTEC oil training and assessment, an LPG course and a BPEC heat pump qualification. Engineers who hold gas, oil and heat pump tickets can cover the full range of local work.
Registering and staying registered
Once you hold ACS certificates, you or your employer can register with Gas Safe. Each certificate lasts five years, after which you take a reassessment. Gower College runs ACS domestic gas assessments and reassessments, so working engineers can renew locally rather than travelling to Cardiff or Bristol.
Adding unvented hot water and water regulations to your gas tickets lets you fit system boilers with cylinders, which are common in Swansea's larger detached homes.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Swansea work across areas including Sketty, Uplands, Mumbles, Killay, Morriston, Townhill, Brynmill, Gorseinon, Pontarddulais and Clydach.
Questions people in Swansea ask

How long do ACS certificates last?
Five years. Gower College runs ACS reassessment courses for engineers renewing their certificates.
Can I train as a gas engineer in Swansea without an employer?
For the apprenticeship, no: you need to be employed by a Gas Safe registered business. For the managed learning programme, you need guaranteed access to supervised work with a registered engineer, so line that up before applying.
