Gas engineer courses in Leeds

How to get onto the Gas Safe Register from Leeds, both for people new to the trade and for plumbers adding gas to their skills.

Leeds has more than 260,000 homes heated by mains gas alone and over 74,000 privately rented households, each of which needs a gas safety check every year. That demand is why the city has one of the region's best-known specialist colleges for building services.

Leeds College of Building

Leeds College of Building runs ACS domestic gas courses, starting with the core gas safety module known as CCN1 and adding appliance modules such as boilers and cookers. Entry to the ACS course expects either the BPEC Gas Foundation course or previous experience as a gas fitter.

The college is also listed by the government's apprenticeship service as a provider of the Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative apprenticeship. Check its website for current start dates and fees.

Starting from scratch

If you're new to the trade, the apprenticeship is the most direct route. You need an employer, often a heating firm or housing provider, and you split your time between work and college.

Adults changing career usually take a managed learning programme that includes supervised time on real jobs, then sit their ACS assessments. Be wary of anyone who promises Gas Safe registration in a few weeks.

Where the work is

Landlord gas safety checks, servicing and boiler swaps make up much of the day for a newly registered engineer. Leeds has a large rented sector, from student houses to council flats, so letting agents and housing providers book a lot of routine work.

Adding F-Gas and heat pump training later gives you work outside the heating season.

Beyond gas

Split air conditioning and air-to-air heat pumps need F-Gas certification, and heat pumps paid for through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme have to be fitted by an MCS certified installer. In a district that hit 39.8°C in 2022 and is fitting more heat pumps each year, those extra tickets widen the jobs you can take on.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Leeds work across areas including Headingley, Roundhay, Horsforth, Chapel Allerton, Morley, Pudsey, Garforth, Rothwell, Otley and Wetherby.

Questions people in Leeds ask

How long does it take to qualify?

For a Leeds apprentice starting from scratch, expect roughly two to three years before registration. A managed learning route for adults is shorter but still involves months of supervised work before assessment.

Does ACS cover oil and LPG?

ACS has separate LPG categories. Oil is covered by OFTEC, which has its own courses and registration.

Can I train while I work?

Yes. Apprentices are employed from day one, and adult learners on a managed route usually keep a job while they build their portfolio of supervised gas work.
