Gas engineer courses in Wakefield

Training routes into gas engineering for people in Wakefield, Castleford, Pontefract and the surrounding towns.

No district in West Yorkshire depends on mains gas more than Wakefield, where over 125,000 households use it as their only heating. That keeps engineers busy with servicing, repairs and replacements, and it's why local training is worth finding.

Castleford College apprenticeship

Castleford College lists a Level 3 Gas Operative apprenticeship, delivered part time by day or block release over 30 months. It's aimed at people already working in plumbing and heating, and recommends you've completed an intermediate plumbing and heating apprenticeship and hold Level 2 English and maths.

As with any apprenticeship, you need an employer. Contact the college's apprenticeship team for fees if you're 19 or over.

Other routes

Adults moving into the trade can take a managed learning programme followed by ACS assessments, then register with Gas Safe. Leeds College of Building runs ACS courses and is within easy reach of Wakefield.

Check any private provider carefully. Without real supervised work, you can't build the portfolio needed for assessment.

Work in the district

Social landlords house more than one in five Wakefield households and book large volumes of gas safety checks and servicing. Many new engineers start on that kind of planned work before moving into installations.

Adding other skills

Once you're qualified, F-Gas certification lets you work on air conditioning and air-to-air heat pumps. MCS certification lets your firm fit heat pumps under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. HETAS covers solid fuel and wood stoves, and in a district where nearly a thousand homes still burn solid fuel, that's a niche worth considering.

For the few hundred oil-fired boilers in the district you'd need OFTEC training, a separate scheme with its own registration.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Wakefield work across areas including Sandal, Outwood, Horbury, Ossett, Normanton, Stanley, Alverthorpe, Crigglestone, Lupset and Agbrigg.
