Gas engineer courses in London

Routes into gas work in London, from a college apprenticeship to ACS assessment for plumbers who already have site experience.

Around seven in ten London homes heat with mains gas alone, and every privately rented one needs a gas safety check each year. That's steady work for engineers on the Gas Safe Register, and you can't join it without a recognised qualification.

The apprenticeship route

The College of North West London runs a Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative apprenticeship at its Willesden campus. Entry usually means four or five GCSEs at grade 4 to 5 including English, or a Level 2 qualification, and there may be an interview.

As with any apprenticeship, you need an employer to take you on, and you earn while you train. Ask the college about current start dates and how long the programme runs.

Already a plumber?

Experienced plumbers usually take a managed learning programme and then ACS assessments, the certificates Gas Safe registration is based on. Part of it is a portfolio of real gas work done alongside a registered engineer.

Be careful with courses that promise registration in a few weeks with no portfolio. Check any training centre independently before paying.

Where London work comes from

Landlord gas safety records are a big share of it. HSE requires every appliance and flue in a rented home to be checked every 12 months, and with 30% of London households renting privately, letting agents book these in bulk. Many newly registered engineers start on landlord checks and servicing, then move into installs.

London flats also throw up jobs you see less of elsewhere: flues hidden in ceiling voids that must be inspectable, boilers squeezed into cupboards, and parking that makes every visit slower. Training that includes real work in flats prepares you better than time on a workshop rig.

Skills beyond gas

Split air conditioning needs F-Gas certification, and heat pumps fitted under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme need an MCS certified installer. In a city that reached 40.2°C in 2022, an engineer with gas and refrigeration skills has work in both seasons.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover London work across areas including Islington, Hackney, Camden, Brixton, Wimbledon, Ealing, Croydon, Walthamstow, Greenwich and Richmond.

Questions people in London ask

Can I train while working?

Yes. Apprentices work for an employer and study at college. Plumbers on the ACS route can keep working while they build their portfolio.

Do I need ACS to work on oil boilers?

No. Gas Safe and ACS cover gas only. Oil work comes under OFTEC, which has its own courses and registration.
