The apprenticeship
It covers gas safety law, combustion, installing and servicing appliances, and fault finding. At the end you sit ACS assessments and can register with Gas Safe. You need an employer willing to take you on, so approach local heating firms directly as well as searching Find an apprenticeship.
Most providers ask for GCSE English and maths at grade 4, or a commitment to reach it during the apprenticeship.
Ask whether the employer will also put you through water regulations and unvented hot water training, which most domestic heating work needs.
Retraining as an adult
Adults can take a managed learning programme instead. You train at a centre, then build a portfolio of real work alongside a registered engineer before your ACS assessments. Be cautious about any course that promises registration in a few weeks.
Keeping your tickets current
ACS certificates last five years. Engineers working in Northampton need to plan reassessment before the expiry date or their Gas Safe registration lapses for those categories. Many centres also offer short update training before the assessment for those who have been out of the trade.
Oil work in the villages
About 5% of households across West Northamptonshire heat with oil, many in villages. An engineer with OFTEC qualifications as well as Gas Safe registration can take on that work too. Heat pump qualifications are worth adding as off-gas homes switch.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Northampton work across areas including Abington, Kingsthorpe, Duston, Weston Favell, Far Cotton, Kingsley, Spinney Hill, Upton, Wootton and Moulton.
Questions people in Northampton ask
How long does it take?
The apprenticeship usually lasts about two years. Adult routes depend on how quickly you can complete your portfolio.
Is there enough gas work in Northampton?
Most homes in the town are on mains gas, and landlords must have gas checked every year, so there is steady servicing and repair work. Off-gas villages add oil and heat pump work for engineers with those qualifications.
