Gas engineer courses in Peterborough
How to train for gas work in Peterborough, from an apprenticeship to routes for experienced plumbers.
Peterborough College runs a Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative apprenticeship. Apprentices work for an employer for at least 30 hours a week and attend the college's Gas Centre one day a week. The college lists an 18-month course with a September 2026 start, subject to availability.
Employers set their own entry requirements, but the college says five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, ideally including English, maths and science, are typical.

Assessment and qualifications
An assessor visits your workplace to track progress. At the end, the end-point assessment leads to Gas Safe registration. With a pass or distinction you can apply for IGEM membership as an Engineering Technician.
Local demand
Gas heats over three quarters of Peterborough homes, and a quarter of households rent privately, so landlord checks and servicing are steady work. The large stock of township homes from the 1970s and 80s is now on its second or third boiler, which keeps installers busy.
Housing associations, which house most of Peterborough's social tenants, also run planned servicing and boiler replacement programmes through contractors that take on apprentices.
Oil and LPG
Peterborough has more off-gas homes than most cities, about 2,700 on oil or LPG. OFTEC qualifications for oil and LPG-specific training open up work in the villages. These are separate from Gas Safe.
Pay and progression
Apprentices earn while they learn, at least the apprentice minimum wage, and many employers pay more as skills grow. After qualifying, engineers move into installation, commercial gas, technical roles with manufacturers, or running their own business. Adding heat pump and F-Gas skills widens the options further.
Experienced plumbers
If you already work in plumbing, a managed learning programme and ACS assessments are the usual route to Gas Safe registration. Check any training provider's accreditation carefully.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Peterborough work across areas including Bretton, Orton, Werrington, Hampton, Stanground, Millfield, Dogsthorpe, Woodston, Eye and Yaxley.
