Gas engineer courses in Nottingham

Where to train or renew your gas qualifications in Nottingham, and what each route involves.

Nottingham College runs a dedicated Gas Centre at its Basford campus on Nuthall Road. It covers both ends of a gas career: a Domestic Gas Foundation managed learning programme for people changing career, and ACS assessments for working engineers who need to renew.

Nottingham at a glance

District heating
Nottingham City Council runs a heat network of 68 km of insulated pipe across the city centre and St Ann's. It supplies heating and hot water to about 5,000 dwellings and over 100 commercial premises, using heat from the Eastcroft incinerator, with gas boilers as back-up. Source

New to gas

The Domestic Gas Foundation route combines training at the centre with supervised work in the field. You build a portfolio, then sit ACS assessments before you can register with Gas Safe. The college says accreditation courses range from £200 to £2,750 per delegate.

The Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative apprenticeship is the alternative if you can find an employer. You earn while you train, and your training costs are covered.

Already registered

ACS certificates last five years. The Basford centre offers core gas safety (CCN1) re-assessment, plus appliance categories for boilers and water heaters, cookers, fires and meters. The college says courses can be booked year-round.

Local demand

About 91,000 Nottingham households heat with mains gas alone, and many rent privately and need a yearly gas safety check. District heating covers some of the city centre, so not every flat has a boiler, but domestic gas work remains the bulk of the market.

Choosing a training provider

Ask any provider how they arrange the supervised site work your portfolio needs, and whether that is included in the price. College-based routes and apprenticeships usually build it in; some private fast-track courses leave you to find it yourself.

Check that the ACS assessment centre is UKAS accredited, as Gas Safe only accepts certificates from accredited centres.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Nottingham work across areas including West Bridgford, Beeston, Wollaton, Sneinton, Lenton, Mapperley, Arnold, Carlton, Bulwell and Hucknall.

Questions people in Nottingham ask

Can I learn about heat pumps in Nottingham too?

Nottingham College lists a part-time BPEC Level 3 Award in air source heat pump systems. Many gas engineers add it to their skills.

Do I need plumbing experience first?

It helps a lot. Many people start with a plumbing qualification and add gas once they are working.

What about commercial gas work?

Commercial catering and larger boilers need separate ACS categories. Most engineers start domestic and add commercial qualifications once they have experience.
