Why gas skills are in demand here

About 184,000 Sheffield households heat with mains gas alone, according to the 2021 Census. The council houses 15.6% of households and services gas appliances in its homes every year. Private landlords add more annual safety checks. That is a lot of servicing, repair and replacement work.

Soft water means fewer scale-related call-outs than in the Midlands, but corrosion, sludge and wear keep engineers busy, and the city's semis and terraces will need boiler replacements for years to come.

Apprenticeship route

You work for a heating company or a large landlord and train with the college. The apprenticeship covers gas safety law, combustion, installation, servicing and fault-finding. Once the college signs off your portfolio, ACS assessments follow and then Gas Safe registration.

The Sheffield College's Apprenticeships+ team can explain entry requirements and whether it has employers looking for gas apprentices. Search the government's Find an apprenticeship service for Sheffield vacancies too, as employers advertise there directly.

Adults changing career

Adults can take a managed learning programme with a private training centre. You still need a portfolio of supervised work in real homes. Check how a provider arranges that and what it costs before you sign up.

Plumbing experience is a big help, and many people qualify in plumbing first.

Keeping qualified

ACS certificates last five years, so working engineers reassess before they expire. If you plan to work on council housing or for larger contractors, expect them to check your Gas Safe card and categories before you start.

Unvented hot water, water regulations and electrical safety qualifications widen the work you can take on.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Sheffield work across areas including Crookes, Walkley, Hillsborough, Ecclesall, Nether Edge, Broomhill, Sharrow, Heeley, Dore and Stocksbridge.
