Oil boiler servicing in Bradford

Oil-fired heating is uncommon in the Bradford district, but every oil boiler needs a yearly service by an OFTEC registered technician.

The 2021 Census counted 702 Bradford district households heating with oil only, 0.3% of the total. Most are likely to be farms and hamlets on the moor edges of the district, beyond the reach of the gas network.

Expect fewer technicians to choose from than in rural North Yorkshire. Booking in late summer avoids the autumn rush.

Bradford at a glance

How homes are heated
78.4% of Bradford households heat with mains gas only, 7.2% with electricity only and 0.3% (702 homes) with oil only. 8.7% have two or more types of central heating. Source

What's included

An OFTEC registered technician cleans the burner and heat exchanger, replaces the nozzle and filter, checks combustion, and tests the fire valve and oil supply line. They should leave a service record, which you need for the warranty and building insurance.

Tanks on exposed sites

Tanks on high, exposed moorland sites take a battering from frost and wind. Ask for a tank inspection at every service. Look for cracks or white stress marks on plastic tanks, rust on steel ones, and make sure the base is level and sound.

Our heating oil prices guide explains how to time deliveries.

Switching to a heat pump

If you're thinking of moving off oil, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards an air source heat pump, plus £1,500 more for oil and LPG homes with no gas connection until March 2027. Farmhouses with space and some insulation can work well.

LPG is a different trade

Another 1,050 households in the district use tank or bottled gas only. LPG boilers are serviced by Gas Safe engineers with LPG on their registration, not by OFTEC technicians, so check which fuel you have before you book.

If you've moved into a rural house and aren't sure, look at the tank. Oil tanks are usually rectangular or cylindrical plastic or steel; LPG tanks are pressure vessels, often painted green or white, owned by the supplier.

Questions people in Bradford ask

Can a gas engineer service an oil boiler?

Only if they also hold OFTEC qualifications. Gas Safe registration doesn't cover oil.

How do I find a technician near me?

Send us the postcode. Our request goes to OFTEC registered technicians covering that area, which on the moor edges could mean a firm from Keighley, Skipton or Halifax.
