Oil boiler servicing in Leeds

Oil heating is rare in Leeds, but the homes that use it need a yearly service by an OFTEC registered technician.

The 2021 Census found just 660 Leeds households, 0.2%, heating with oil alone. They're mostly in the rural north and east of the district, around Wetherby, Bramham, Harewood and the villages towards Otley, where farmhouses and older cottages were never connected to the gas main.

Because there are so few, not every heating firm in Leeds works on oil. Book early in autumn.

What an OFTEC service includes

The technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, fits a new nozzle and filter, checks the flue gases and tests the fire valve and oil line. A Gas Safe engineer can't do this unless they also hold OFTEC qualifications.

Ask for a copy of the service record. You'll want it for the warranty and if you sell the house.

Check the tank too

Older single-skin tanks are the weak point. Ask the technician to look for cracks, rust, a sagging base or a missing bund. A leak into a field drain or beck can be far more expensive than a new tank. Our heating oil prices guide helps with timing your next order.

Moving off oil

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards an air source heat pump. If your home uses oil and has no gas connection, there's an extra £1,500 until March 2027. Rural houses around Leeds often have the space for one.

Off-gas homes and the Leeds countryside

Some off-gas homes around Leeds use LPG from a tank or bottles instead of oil; 1,439 households did in 2021. LPG appliances are gas work, so they need a Gas Safe engineer with LPG on their card, not an OFTEC technician.

If you've just bought a rural property, find out which fuel it runs on before the first winter. The heating oil prices guide on this site explains how deliveries and prices work.

1930s semis

A handful of semis on lanes beyond the gas network use oil. A semi with a garden is an easy heat pump site once the old tank is removed.

Questions people in Leeds ask

Is a yearly service really needed on an oil boiler?

Every year. Oil burns less cleanly than gas, and soot builds up faster.

Can I get mains gas instead?

Only if a main runs close enough. Ask Northern Gas Networks for a quote, but compare it with a heat pump and the grant before deciding.
