Home Oil boiler servicing Brighton

Oil boiler servicing in Brighton and Hove

Oil-fired homes are rare in the city, but they still need a yearly service by an OFTEC registered technician.

About 200 households in Brighton and Hove heated with oil alone in 2021, under 0.2% of homes. Most of the city has mains gas, so oil tends to survive in farm cottages and isolated houses on the Downs beyond the built-up area.

Fewer technicians cover oil here than in rural Sussex, so book ahead of winter.

Brighton at a glance

How homes are heated
75.3% of households heat with mains gas only, 11.9% with electricity only and 1.6% from a heat network. 2.3% (2,844 homes) have no central heating, and oil-only heating covers about 200 homes. Source

What the service covers

The technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, fits a new nozzle and filter, tests combustion and checks the oil line, fire valve and controls. Only an OFTEC registered technician should do this; Gas Safe registration doesn't cover oil.

Signs it needs attention before the service

A smell of oil or fumes indoors, black soot around the flue terminal, the burner locking out more than once, or a sudden rise in oil use all mean the boiler shouldn't wait for its annual visit. Switch it off if you smell fumes and book a technician.

Fit a carbon monoxide alarm in the room with the boiler if there isn't one. It is a legal requirement in rented homes with a fuel-burning appliance.

Tank checks

Ask for the tank and its base to be inspected on the same visit. Cracked plastic tanks and rusty steel ones can leak into the chalk, and clean-up costs are high. Our heating oil prices guide helps you time your next order.

Switching away from oil

Homes off the gas grid get £7,500 from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme towards a heat pump, and those currently using oil or LPG can get an extra £1,500 until March 2027. Rural plots usually have the space for an outdoor unit.

Before any major oil repair, ask an MCS installer for a heat loss survey. It shows what size heat pump the house would need and whether the radiators would cope.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Brighton work across areas including Hove, Kemptown, Hanover, Preston Park, Patcham, Withdean, Hollingbury, Woodingdean, Rottingdean and Portslade.

Questions people in Brighton ask

My cottage on the Downs runs on oil. Does it need servicing every year?

Yes. Oil burners soot up faster than gas ones, and a dirty nozzle wastes fuel and causes lockouts.

Can I find an OFTEC technician near me?

Give us your postcode and we pass your request to OFTEC registered technicians who cover it, who may be based elsewhere in Sussex.

Do oil boilers need a gas safety certificate?

No. Oil appliances are checked by an OFTEC technician, who issues an OFTEC service record. Landlords should still keep it with their safety paperwork.
