Oil boiler servicing in London

Very few London homes run on oil, but those that do still need a yearly service by an OFTEC registered technician.

Only 0.1% of London households heated with oil alone in the 2021 Census, about 4,300 homes. Most of the capital has had mains gas for decades, so oil tends to hang on where the gas main never reached, typically farmhouses and isolated cottages on the Green Belt edge of the outer boroughs.

That scarcity matters. Fewer technicians in and around London work on oil, so book before the heating season rather than waiting for the first cold week.

How homes are heated

What the service covers

The technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, replaces the nozzle and filters, tests the flue gases, and checks the oil supply line and fire valve. An OFTEC registered technician can also self-certify new oil installations under Building Regulations.

Gas Safe registration alone isn't enough here; a London engineer also needs OFTEC qualifications for oil work.

The tank

Get the London technician to inspect the tank during the same visit. Plastic tanks crack with age and steel ones rust, and a leak into the ground can cost far more to clean up than a new tank. Our heating oil prices guide helps you time your next delivery.

Thinking of switching?

For a London home, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump. London homes off mains gas that run on oil or LPG can claim a further £1,500 until March 2027. Rural plots on London's fringe usually have the outdoor space a heat pump needs.

Ask an MCS installer for a heat loss survey before your next big oil repair, so you can compare the cost of fixing the old boiler with replacing it.

Questions people in London ask

How often should a London oil boiler be serviced?

Once a year, by an OFTEC registered technician. Oil burners soot up faster than gas ones, and a worn nozzle wastes fuel and can make the boiler lock out.

I've bought a London house with an unused oil tank. What now?

Have a specialist drain and remove it, and ask for paperwork showing how the oil and the tank were disposed of. A forgotten tank with oil still in it can leak years later.

Can you find someone who services oil boilers near me?

Tell us your postcode and we pass the request to OFTEC registered technicians who cover it. On the edge of London that may be a firm based in Surrey, Kent, Essex or Hertfordshire.
