Oil boiler servicing in Chelmsford

Oil is a common way to heat homes in Chelmsford's villages. Send us your postcode and we contact OFTEC registered technicians who service oil boilers there.

Chelmsford has far more oil-heated homes than most English cities. The 2021 Census counted 3,994 households, 5.3% of the city, heating with oil alone. They are concentrated in the rural parts of the city's area, villages such as Writtle, Boreham and Danbury and the farmland between them, where the gas main never arrived.

If that is you, a yearly service is the single best way to avoid a winter breakdown. Oil boilers need more regular attention than gas, because the burner and nozzle wear and soot up as they run.

What a proper service includes

An OFTEC registered technician should clean the burner and combustion chamber, fit a new nozzle and filter, adjust the burner using a flue gas analyser, check the controls and test the fire valve. Ask for the combustion readings in writing; they show how efficiently the boiler is burning fuel.

Gas Safe registration does not cover oil. Check the technician's OFTEC number when you book.

The tank and oil line

Ask for a tank inspection on the same visit. Plastic tanks can split and steel tanks corrode, and the base and supports can sink over time. Spilled oil is expensive to clean up and can pollute ditches and watercourses, which are common around the Chelmer valley villages.

Larger tanks, or tanks close to drains, watercourses or the house, may need a bund. Your technician can tell you whether yours meets current rules, and our heating oil prices guide is useful for planning when to reorder.

Weighing up a heat pump

Chelmsford's oil-heated homes are often detached houses with gardens, which suits an air source heat pump. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500, plus an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for oil or LPG homes with no mains gas.

Lower-income households in homes rated EPC D to G can also apply to Heat Essex for the Warm Homes: Local Grant, which can fund insulation and heating upgrades.

Questions people in Chelmsford ask

When is the best time to book an oil service?

Once every 12 months, ideally in late summer or early autumn before demand peaks. Technicians get booked up quickly once the weather turns cold.

My boiler keeps locking out. What should I do?

Press reset once. If it locks out again, stop and call a technician. Repeated resets can flood the chamber with unburnt oil. Check the tank level too, since running dry is a common cause.

Who services LPG boilers?

LPG is a gas, so it needs a Gas Safe engineer qualified for LPG. Around 1,150 Chelmsford homes used tank or bottled gas only in 2021.
