Oil boiler servicing in Cambridge
Oil-fired homes are rare inside Cambridge but common in the surrounding fen and village areas. Each needs a yearly OFTEC service.
Just 97 Cambridge households heated with oil alone in the 2021 Census, 0.2% of the city. Almost all of Cambridge is on the gas network, so oil users are mostly in the villages beyond the city boundary.

The OFTEC service
The technician cleans the burner, replaces the nozzle and filters, checks combustion and tests the safety controls. They should leave a record of the flue gas readings.
Only OFTEC registered technicians should do this work. Gas Safe engineers are not qualified for oil unless they also hold OFTEC qualifications.
Tank and supply
Have the tank, base and supply pipe inspected at the same visit. Look for cracks, rust, weeping or a leaning base. A leak can contaminate the ground and is expensive to clean.

Warning signs
Book a technician sooner if you notice black smoke at the flue, a smell of oil or fumes indoors, soot marks around the boiler casing or a boiler that keeps locking out. Do not keep pressing reset, as unburnt oil can collect in the chamber.
Moving away from oil
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards a heat pump, plus £1,500 extra until March 2027 for oil or LPG homes with no gas main. Rural homes with gardens usually suit a heat pump well.
Local training
Cambridge Regional College runs OFTEC oil training and assessment, so technicians in the area can qualify and renew locally.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Cambridge work across areas including Chesterton, Romsey, Cherry Hinton, Trumpington, Arbury, Newnham, Histon, Girton, Great Shelford and Milton.
Questions people in Cambridge ask
How often does it need a service?
Once a year, before winter. Oil burners soot up faster than gas boilers.
Can you find a technician near me?
Yes. Give us your postcode and we pass your request to OFTEC registered technicians covering it.
What about LPG?
LPG boilers are gas appliances and need a Gas Safe engineer with LPG on their card, not an OFTEC technician. 188 Cambridge homes used tank or bottled gas only in 2021.
I've moved into a house with an old oil tank. What should I do?
If the house now runs on gas, have a specialist drain and remove the tank, and keep the disposal paperwork for when you sell. If it is still in use, book an OFTEC inspection before the first delivery.
