Oil boiler servicing in Peterborough
Oil heats more Peterborough homes than in most cities. An OFTEC registered technician should service your boiler every year.
The 2021 Census counted 1,761 homes in the Peterborough City Council area heated by oil only, 2.1% of households, plus 979 on LPG. You'll mostly find them in the villages beyond the gas network rather than in the city's townships.
That's enough demand to support local technicians, but autumn is still busy. Book your service in summer.

What the technician does
An OFTEC technician cleans the combustion chamber and heat exchanger, replaces the nozzle and filter, checks the oil supply and fire valve, and tests combustion with an analyser. They adjust the burner to run cleanly.
Gas engineers aren't qualified for oil unless they also hold OFTEC qualifications.
The tank
Ask for a tank inspection at the service. Look for cracks, bulging, rust or weeping joints, and check the base is sound. Plastic tanks degrade in sunlight over years.
Heating oil theft happens in rural areas. A lockable cap and a tank gauge you check regularly help. Our heating oil prices guide helps you plan fills.
Bunding and regulations
Oil storage rules depend on the tank size and where it sits. Tanks near a watercourse, a drain or a borehole, or larger than 2,500 litres, usually need a bund to catch leaks. An OFTEC technician can tell you whether your tank meets current rules and what to do if it doesn't.
Should you switch?
Oil-heated homes with no gas main get £9,000 from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027. The local Warm Homes grant can also fund heat pumps for eligible homes. Ask an MCS installer to survey your home before your next major oil repair.

Questions people in Peterborough ask
Why does oil need a service every single year?
Oil soots up faster than gas, and a dirty burner wastes fuel and can lock out on a cold morning.
Who will come out to my village?
We pass your postcode to OFTEC registered technicians whose area includes it, from the city edge out towards the Fens.
My boiler is smoking. What should I do?
Turn it off and call a technician. Smoke means poor combustion, which can also produce carbon monoxide.
