Oil boiler service in Northampton
Yearly oil boiler servicing by OFTEC registered technicians covering Northampton and the surrounding villages.
Oil heating is a real part of life around Northampton. In the 2021 Census, 5.0% of households in West Northamptonshire, about 8,600 homes, heated with oil alone. Most are in villages beyond the town, across the old Daventry and South Northamptonshire districts, where the gas main never arrived.
In Northampton itself, oil is much rarer, but a few older properties on the edges of town still use it.

What's included
An OFTEC technician strips and cleans the burner, replaces the nozzle and oil filter, checks combustion with a flue gas analyser, and tests the controls and fire valve. They also check the flue, the oil line and the tank.
You get a service record. Keep it for your insurer and the boiler warranty.
Looking after the tank
Walk round your tank every few months. Look for cracks, bulges, rust, damp patches below it or a strong oil smell. A plastic tank usually lasts around 20 years. A leaking tank can contaminate soil and water, and the clean-up can be very expensive.
Bunded tanks are required in many situations, such as near a watercourse. Your technician can advise.
Warning signs between services
Call a technician if you see smoke from the flue, smell fumes indoors, notice soot around the terminal or the boiler keeps locking out. These point to poor combustion, which wastes oil and can be dangerous.
Every oil-heated home in the villages should have a carbon monoxide alarm near the boiler.
Moving to a heat pump
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 off a heat pump, plus £1,500 extra until March 2027 for homes on oil or LPG with no mains gas. West Northamptonshire's Warm Homes: Local Grant also funds low-carbon heating for off-grid homes on lower incomes.
Ask for a heat loss survey before your next major oil boiler repair, so you can compare costs.
