Oil boiler servicing in Milton Keynes

Oil heating is uncommon in the new city but turns up in the villages around it. Have yours serviced yearly by an OFTEC registered technician.

The 2021 Census found 1,031 homes in the Milton Keynes City Council area heated by oil only, 0.9% of households, plus 888 using LPG. Most are likely in the rural north of the borough, around Olney and the villages, rather than in the new city.

Book your service in summer to avoid the autumn rush.

Service checklist

An OFTEC technician cleans the burner and heat exchanger, replaces the nozzle and filter, checks the fuel line and fire valve, and runs a combustion test. A clean, well-adjusted burner uses less oil.

Warning signs

Don't wait for the next service if you see black smoke, smell oil or fumes indoors, find soot around the flue, or the boiler keeps locking out. Switch it off at the controls and get an OFTEC technician booked. Fit a carbon monoxide alarm near the boiler if there isn't one.

Tank care

Inspect your tank for cracks, rust and leaks, keep plants away from it and check the gauge regularly. Ask the technician to look at it during the service. When it's time to reorder, our heating oil prices guide explains what moves the price.

Bunding

Tanks above 2,500 litres, or close to a watercourse, drain or well, generally need a bund to contain leaks. Your technician can tell you whether yours meets the rules.

Switching to a heat pump

Homes heated by oil with no gas main get £9,000 towards a heat pump from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027. Village homes often have the garden space for an outdoor unit.

Ask for the inspection notes in writing, as buyers' surveyors often ask to see them when a rural house is sold.

Questions people in Milton Keynes ask

Will my usual gas engineer do it?

Only if they also hold OFTEC qualifications. Gas Safe registration doesn't cover oil.

Do you cover Olney and the northern villages?

Send us your postcode and we pass it to OFTEC registered technicians who cover it.

How often does a tank need replacing?

There's no fixed age. Plastic tanks become brittle and steel ones rust, so follow your technician's advice after each inspection.
