Oil boiler servicing in Oxford
Oil heating is rare inside the city, but the homes that use it still need a yearly service by an OFTEC registered technician.
The 2021 Census counted just 88 Oxford households heating with oil alone, 0.2% of the city. Another 320 used tank or bottled gas. Oil is far more common in the villages outside the city boundary, where there is no gas main, so most oil technicians serving Oxford are based out in the county.
Oxford at a glance
- How homes are heated
- 75.7% of Oxford households heat with mains gas only and 12.1% with electricity only. Just 88 homes (0.2%) rely on oil alone and 320 (0.6%) on tank or bottled gas. Source
What the technician does
An oil service includes cleaning the burner, replacing the nozzle and filters, checking combustion with a flue gas analyser and testing the fire valve. The technician should also look at the oil line from the tank to the boiler.
Only an OFTEC registered technician should do this. A Gas Safe engineer is not qualified for oil unless they also hold OFTEC qualifications.
Tank checks
Ask for the tank and its base to be inspected at the same visit. Look for cracks, bulging or weeping on plastic tanks and rust on steel ones. A leak can contaminate the ground and is costly to clean up. For timing your next fill-up, see our heating oil prices guide.
Tanks installed or replaced since building rules were tightened may need secondary containment, known as a bund, depending on size and how close they are to drains, watercourses or the house. An OFTEC technician can tell you whether yours meets the current standard.
Switching away from oil
Homes on oil with no mains gas connection can get the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant plus an extra £1,500 until March 2027. If your home is near a gas main, compare a connection with a heat pump before deciding.

Questions people in Oxford ask
Does an oil boiler need a service every year?
Yes, it should be done annually. Oil combustion leaves more soot than gas, and a blocked nozzle or filter wastes fuel and can make the boiler lock out in the middle of winter.
Is LPG serviced by the same people?
No. LPG boilers are gas appliances and need a Gas Safe engineer qualified for LPG. Oil needs an OFTEC technician.
Can you find an oil technician for an address in Oxford?
Yes. Send your Oxford postcode and we forward it to OFTEC registered technicians in range. Because so few city homes use oil, the firm may be based in a nearby market town.
