Oil boiler servicing in Reading

Oil heating is rare inside Reading, but where it exists it needs a yearly service by an OFTEC registered technician.

The 2021 Census counted 90 Reading households heating with oil alone, about 0.1% of homes. Rather more, 441, used tank or bottled gas only. Both are off-gas fuels found mostly where the gas main never reached.

Oil is far more common in the villages of West Berkshire and South Oxfordshire, so the technician who services yours may be based out there. Book before the heating season starts.

The annual service

The technician cleans the burner and combustion chamber, replaces the nozzle and oil filter, checks the flue and tests combustion, then checks the fire valve and controls. You should get an OFTEC service record.

Gas Safe registration doesn't cover oil, so ask to see OFTEC registration.

Warning signs between services

Black soot around the flue terminal, a smell of oil or fumes indoors, the burner locking out repeatedly or oil use jumping without a colder winter all mean the boiler needs a technician now. Fit a carbon monoxide alarm in the boiler room if you don't have one.

Tank care

Look for cracks, bulging, rust or oil stains around the tank base, and ask the technician to check the tank and supply pipe. A leak into the ground can cost far more to clean up than a new tank. Our heating oil prices guide helps you time your orders.

Moving off oil

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards a heat pump, with an extra £1,500 for homes switching from oil or LPG until March 2027. Lower-income households in homes rated EPC D or below may also get low-carbon heating through Reading's Warm Homes: Local Grant, which says it can replace oil boilers with air source heat pumps.
